Watford are still unable to confirm who their opposition will be on August 11 - the weekend before the Championship campaign kicks off.

The Hornets have pencilled in a friendly away to Shrewsbury Town for that date but the club have stressed it is only a provisional fixture and supporters are advised not to make travel plans just yet.

We understand the Football League have told clubs there may be a chance some of the Capital One Cup first round fixtures could be played on Saturday, August 11 rather than midweek, which would be just a few days before the league campaigns begin.

However, we understand there are problems when it comes to policing matches around the London area due to the Olympics Games, which will be taking place at that time, and the Hornets are expected to wait until the Carling Cup draw next Thursday before deciding whether to confirm the Shrewsbury match.

All Championship, League One and League Two clubs will go into the hat next week, except for the two highest placed clubs in last season’s table – Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers.

Those two relegated Premier League clubs will enter at the second round stage, while the seven top-flight teams in European competition will join the field in the third round.

The Football League last week announced a four-year sponsorship deal with credit card company Capital One, who replace Carling as the competition sponsor.
