Scott Cuthbert is ready to get back to the heart of the Orient defence following the postponement of the weekend trip to Oldham Athletic.

The O’s were hoping to continue their impressive recent away form at Boundary Park but an inspection last Friday saw the fixture postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Saturday’s match sees the visit of promotion-chasing Huddersfield Town but despite the free-scoring nature to the Terriers season, Cuthbert believes the O’s can again prove more than a match to Lee Clark’s side.

Town’s Jordan Rhodes has attracted a lot of interest this campaign thanks to his 29 goals but Cuthbert is excited to face the challenge of League One’s most potent strike force, insisting it is the duty of the defence to thwart the opposition forwards.

“We seem to do well against the teams in the top half of the table,” said the 24-year-old. “It is the first aim of a defender to keep the goals out.”

He continued: “There are a lot of good strikers in this league. It is nice if you can shut them out and help the team.”

Orient’s last outing saw them fall to a 1-0 defeat at home to Colchester United and the Oldham trip could have proved the perfect tonic for Russell Slade’s side to bounce back.

Cuthbert stressed the mood in the camp was good though, despite the conditions having an effect on their usual training regime.

“Everyone’s fine. It is frustrating that the game had to be called off. We had a weekend off which is nice but we had a hard session on Monday and another good one today (Tuesday),” he continued.

“We have been indoors for the last two days. The pitch is covered so we have been indoors but it gives us something different.”

The Oldham fixture has been rearranged for Tuesday, March 27, meaning the O’s now have eight matches scheduled for next month.

Asked if such a busy period was a concern for the club, Cuthbert replied: “Not really. From my point of view, I prefer to be playing.

“The more games that come along, the better for me.”
