Former Leyton Orient defender Ian Hendon has been appointed as the club's new head coach, as the Guardian Series reported on Tuesday, and will take up the reins from July 1.

Hendon, whose previous managerial roles were with Barnet and Dover Athletic, succeeds Fabio Liverani at Brisbane Road.

Speaking to the club website following his appointment, Hendon said: "Orient is a club that means a great deal to me – I hope that fans will remember the commitment I showed as a player, and know they can expect the same dedication from me as head coach.

"I've got a lot of experience of the lower leagues, having played at every level during my career and worked in League Two as player/manager, but having spent a few years working in the Premier League I have learnt a huge amount that will stand me in good stead for this new challenge.

"I hope to be able to bring some stability to the club and help rebuild after the disappointment of last season.

"Promotion is the priority, but reconnecting with the fans is also important. Having met the president, I was impressed with his own long-term plans for the club, and I can't wait to get started."

Owner Francesco Becchetti interviewed former Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson but he was too expensive for the club. The O's also spoke to Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale and Paul Ince over the position but have opted for Hendon.

In his previous stint as Bees boss, Hendon was sacked after one year in April 2010 with the club 22nd in League Two and two matches of the season remaining.

Hendon also had a brief stint in charge of Dover Athletic in June 2010 but quit after just 18 days to become assistant manager at Gillingham.

He became development coach at West Ham in 2011 before being promoted the following year to first-team coach under Sam Allardyce.

Born in Ilford, Hendon made 153 appearances for Orient in all competitions after initially joining on loan from first club Tottenham Hotspur.

He returned to E10 on a permanent basis in 1993 and spent four years at Brisbane Road before departing for Notts County.
