Arriving home from Swindon last Sunday, I actually felt quite relieved the circus that was Leyton Orient’s 2014-2015 season had actually come to an end.

The wife too was thankful it was the last time she would have to hide the cat in the back room as per normal after a poor O's performance.

OK so the season had ended in relegation but it was at least over and surly there could be no more bad news emanating out of Brisbane Road, at least for a few months anyway. Or so we thought.

But then again we are Leyton Orient. The last ball had been kicked but days later, word on the street is that we have been placed under a transfer embargo as our accounts were not submitted on time last March.

Then rumours circulate that owner Francesco Becchetti is looking to sell up.

Though as yet unconfirmed, I also understand that Sid James and Kenneth Williams have been spotted at Brisbane Road.

Last season will well and truly go down as quite simply the worst I've ever known in all the years I've been going to watch our wonderful little club.

There have been some stinkers over the years yet nothing can quite match the fiasco that was 2014-2015. The highlight on the pitch was a wonderful win at Villa Park early on, but I have to say apart from that, the most memorable thing for me about the nine months was the wonderful fish and chips I had at Gateshead before the pre-season friendly back in July.

Maybe the players cannot switch off yet, but I've decided to draw a line under last season, however, and look forward to 2015-2016, with the positives that our new division can bring to us.

Most of us have seen us play there before and indeed I have to say that many of my fondest memories following the O's have come in the basement league. I've been at Brisbane Road three times when we've won 8-0 in the fourth tier, we had our great day at Oxford United back in 2006 and it was the scene of our only ever play-off final triumph against Wrexham some 26 years ago.

The good news about what I believe they call 'League Two' is only two sides get relegated at the end of the season, which means that we only have to find a couple of teams worse than us to ensure safety come May, a drop of some 50 per cent on our previous division.

It's been a fair time since we participated in the lower league, but if I remember correctly you only have to finish in the top seven to ensure a play-off spot at the end of it which has not been the case for us in League One. And there are other things to get excited about - there will be three London derbies to look forward to, which have been notably absent in recent times.

The big one of course will be the 'jellied eels derby' to determine the top team in east London - I'm quite sure Mr. Becchetti is well aware of the significance of this game to east-enders and will make a concerted effort to go to Dagenham for it - and it will also be nice to go to Barnet's new ground for the first time and make a first league visit to AFC Wimbledon’s Kingsmeadow.

On the pitch indeed, there is no reason why we should not be up there challenging for promotion.

It is as yet unclear how many of last season’s players will be retained but if the bulk of the squad are still there in August we could, I believe, do very well in the bottom league.

We have just got to hope the likes of Darius Henderson manage to play more than two consecutive games without getting injured (and manage to turn up to games on time) while others refrain from shopping in the west end or spending a week or so travelling out to the West Indies for meaningless friendlies.

The bookmakers, who we are always told are never wrong have made us 7-1 favourites to win the league next year and while those odds might be a little on the short side, I firmly believe my cat could be in for a safer time next term.

I don't think there will be any reason for Becchetti to name the new series of his reality TV show 'Carry On Orient' and come this time next year the players could be looking forward to an open top bus parade to celebrate a quick return to League One rather than a week’s extra training.

As is always the case as Leyton Orient fans we live in hope, but I for one am confident!
