Millwall’s abysmal home record came under scrutiny again from Ian Holloway last night after Sheffield Wednesday became the latest side to enjoy victory at The Den.

The Lions were unable to turn an impressive first half display into goals and paid the price after the break when Lewis McGugan, Atdhe Nuhiu and Stevie May struck to put the Owls 3-0 up.

Diego Fabbrini pulled one back deep in stoppage time but it came for too late in the day to spark an unlikely comeback, meaning Millwall have now lost nine Championship fixtures on their own turf this season.

And current boss Holloway acknowledged the main problem seems to be the lack of response to falling behind, a problem which has existed for several seasons.

He said: “I think the underlying thing for 50 games now, as a Millwall team at home we’ve gone behind about 33 times and only come back once.

“When we go in front we’ve done that 14 times and we’ve actually won 11 of them, drew two and lost the other one.

“I think there is a huge discrepancy between where we are and what we need to do.

“We all feel we need to get that first goal, particularly when we miss a few chances.

“As I say you’ve just got to stick together. We attack together, we defend together, it is as simple as that.

“What I’m expecting is a strong group to be proud of some of that performance and look at the rest of it and say ‘what do we need to do to move on?’

“I’ll look at everything I’ve done, every decision I’ve made, I’ll blame myself and then we will move on and we stick together.

“We’ve got to make sure whoever pulls that shirt on is ready to go and do that, and whoever the manager is on the line is ready to stand there strong, keep encouraging.”

Holloway added: “This is in this level (Championship) I’m talking about (the 50 games statistic).

“In the lower levels we had a much better record than that.

“I don’t know, I wasn’t here for a lot of them but I’m here now and I believe my players changed after that (first Sheffield Wednesday) goal went in.

“I thought the disappointment, you could see it in almost every stride and you can’t be like that.

“We’ve got to stick together and move on, it’s as simple as that.”

Holloway came in for plenty of stick from the stands last night, notably when Millwall supporters quickly joined in with a chant of ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ from the Sheffield Wednesday travelling contingent.

He said: “I want them (players) to step up to the plate as well as myself.

“If people want to blame, that is my job.

“That’s the way it is these days but I want that team to be the same whether we’ve just missed a chance or whether we’ve scored a goal.

“Unfortunately we’re not when we’ve played here and I want them to do that. I think they will grow.

“What don’t kill you makes you stronger I believe and we have to be strong enough to play and take responsibility for a defeat at home because we are in the Championship and that’s what we have to do.”

Holloway added: “Our fans can’t do anything about it, they need our team to do that, they need me to stand strong so I’d much rather they blame me and my team respond in the right way if we let a goal in because we had more than enough chances today and it didn’t go in.

“So we’ve got to make it go in next time.

“I believe we are a totally different set up when we actually get the first goal here and I think the stats will prove it.

“Unfortunately we are not getting the first goal enough but there is more than enough games left.

“I thought the composure of the team before we let a goal in was excellent, after that it wasn’t the same so this team has got to keep working, keep learning and certainly make sure they understand there is a lot of time left to keep doing what you were doing and actually get a goal.”
