Ian Holloway feels Millwall need to start games thinking they are already a goal in front to boost their win ratio in the Championship.

The Lions pulled off a stunning comeback from 3-0 down to rescue a point from a 3-3 draw with Wolves earlier this month, but that bucked a worrying trend which has seen them struggle to get a positive result after falling behind.

Holloway remains confident his side can storm back up the table between now and the end of the campaign, but taking the lead in games is key to that ambition.

He told News Shopper: “Our targets are the same as they were at the start of the season – we want to consolidate, we want to try and be a force to be reckoned with in the Championship instead of someone you expect to beat and we’ve got to prove that by the end of the season.

“At the minute we are about where we finished at the end of last year - but that is only at the moment.

“There are still another three quarters of the games to go but our targets are the same and what we want to try and do is continue to build some confidence.

“Unfortunately, if we don’t score the first goal then we are not as good a team as I want us to be. That’s the truth.

“We’ve got to play like we are already 1-0 up really because if we can keep that belief in ourselves, we could be a very difficult opponent for anybody in this league.”

Holloway added: “The great thing is we didn’t get the first goal against Wolves and we scored three in the last however many minutes.

“It is all about trying to go and do it again and I’m just delighted with the choices I’m going to have.

“The more people I get fit, the bigger problems I’ve got selecting the team.

“Surely that will give us a chance the more choices I’ve got and change our thinking into a bigger and better outfit.

“The way to do that is to prove it by getting some results on a regular basis. The last few have been not bad although the ones in September were not so good.

“Now we have to try and have a good month.”
