Ian Holloway reckons previous results will count for nothing when Millwall take on bogey side Watford this weekend.

The Lions have only beaten Saturday’s opponents once since returning to the Championship in 2010, and the last time they met at Vicarage Road a 4-0 Boxing Day hammering proved to be the final nail in Steve Lomas’ managerial coffin.

Watford sit currently joint top of the Championship, but Ollie is refusing to read anything into that or the fact they have the upper hand recently against Millwall.

The Den chief said: “Past records don’t really mean anything.

“All I keep hearing is Millwall don’t do very well against Watford but I’ve got to try and turn that around and change that mindset.

“They are going to be the third team we have played this season who are at the top but I’m not scared by any of them.

“What we’ve got to do is try and apply ourselves as consistently as they have.

“That’s what we haven’t really done at the moment so hopefully we are starting to get a feel and that bit of confidence going knowing we aren’t just going to ship a load of goals in.

“It would be nice to score from a few more of the opportunities we are creating.

“We are going to have to earn everything at Watford, the pitch will be great and will suit us.

“They are playing in black and white (their kit from 100 years ago at the start of World War One) and we will be in yellow so that will be a bit surreal.

“Hopefully their players will give us the ball because they will think it is their shirt.”

Watford may already be on to their fourth manager this season, but Holloway admires the Italian owners for how they are running the club.

He explained: “We’ve got to pay Watford massive respect.

“If Troy Deeney and Matej Vydra are fit those two were phenomenal a couple of years ago and now they are back together.

“The level and standard of player that they’ve actually got I think they are very fortunate.

“The Italian family who own them are ahead of the game of football.

“They are a credit to the game to be honest with you so I think Watford are lucky to have them.”

Holloway added: “They’ve gone and got a group of players together although they’ve had managerial issues, one of those through health and hopefully Oscar Garcia will be fine.

“Those players are quality, they keep going and we know that they will be very tough but I believe we can gain some confidence from how we are playing and hopefully cause them a few problems at the other end.

“That’s what we will try and do – impose our game on them.”

It had been feared Scott Malone and Matthew Briggs could both miss out the trip to Hertfordshire through injury, giving Holloway a potential selection headache at left-back.

However, the news was a bit more promising this morning on both players.

Holloway revealed: “I’ve got Malone and Briggs both saying they are fit today.

“Do I believe them? I don’t know.

Am I pleased? Yes, because it means they both want to play and it means the confidence is good.

“Are they both fit yet? I really don’t know, I will have a look at them this morning and tomorrow in training but if I’ve got to move Mark Beevers out there I think he can do it – and in this game it wouldn’t be that bad either.”
