MILLWALL columnist AYSE SMITH was impressed by the Lions’ never say die spirit last weekend after Martyn Woolford’s late equaliser rescued a deserved point against Bolton.

A FAIR amount has happened this week.

John Marquis went on loan to Northampton until the end of the season and Tom Bender joined Welling until just after Easter, freeing up some wages to bring in 30-year-old left-back Federico Bessone.

Although he has previously played in England - a total of 61 appearances for Swansea, Leeds, Charlton, Swindon and Oldham - Bessone is a free agent after a spell in America with MLS side Sporting Kansas City.

Ollie believes he is a very good player who will fit in well with the style of football he is trying to develop at Millwall.

The players are full of praise for Holloway and his training methods and they all want to be in the team, Alan Dunne told Ollie he would play anywhere to be in the team – he’d even drive the team coach!

As far as I can remember, the only position he hasn't played in his time at Millwall is keeper and striker.

The players showed a lot more grit at the weekend than they have in previous games.

They were great for the first 15 minutes and then Lukas Jutkiewicz scored for Bolton against the run of play.

Although having many chances on goal, the lads then seemed to lose momentum and it took the injustice of a penalty awarded against Danny Shittu for handball to get the crowd behind the team again and pull them back into the game.

David Forde’s stop has to have been the match saver, as going two down was simply not an option in this game against one of our rivals at the wrong end of the table.

Justice was served and the Lions then pushed forward as Martyn Woolford scored a rebounded effort from Simeon Jackson in the 82nd minute to equalise.

A point is better than nothing I suppose, but just as important was the fact that Bolton didn’t get all three points.

There were four strikers on the pitch again, but two dropped back verging on midfield and it worked a treat.

If that is what Ollie has been trying to do these last few games, then I finally now understand his tactics - 22 shots on goal and 10 corners certainly shows the players are starting to work harder and their fitness has vastly improved.

This weekend it is on to Barnsley, another six-pointer.

With only five points between us, and them being in the bottom two, it is incredibly important to come away with something from Oakwell.
