MILLWALL manager Steve Lomas has his fingers crossed on-loan Leeds United striker Steve Morison can maintain his recent scoring spree over the festive period.

Morison rejoined the Lions in the summer on a season-long loan from Elland Road and has found the target in each of the last two games against Nottingham Forest and Wigan.

And with a busy schedule ahead over Christmas and the New Year, the Lions boss is all too aware how important it is for Morison to maintain his recent form and fire Millwall up the table.

“He is going to be massively important,” said Lomas.

“Steve is a big player for us.

“That is why I got him in, I wanted his energy, physical presence and pace up front to do the job.

“Of course there was his goal scoring record as well in his first spell here.

“If he can get anywhere near that we will be delighted.”

In what has been a tricky start to life as Kenny Jackett’s replacement, Millwall sit 17th in the Championship table and five points above the drop zone under Lomas’ stewardship ahead of this weekend’s visit to Blackburn Rovers.

And the former St Johnstone boss admits things could be better.

Lomas explained: “I would like to have some more points on the board.

“I knew it was going to be up and down.

“Certain things haven’t helped in terms of the injuries and suspensions.

“They’ve certainly played a part and that is not an excuse, just something we can’t hide away from.

“Of course the suspensions and sendings off are down to us, and with injuries it is just a bit of luck you are looking for in terms of having so many impact injuries or even muscle strains.”

He added: “I think we are OK.

“There is no doubt we would like to be further up the table but it is a work in progress.

“Everybody can beat everybody, there is never an easy game because whatever team you are playing in the Championship there is always different challenges and players which can hurt you.

“Ultimately if you are not on your game then you get found out.”

Lomas rates Liam Trotter and Richard Chaplow as “doubtful” for Saturday’s trip to Ewood Park.

Nicky Bailey will definitely miss out but Lomas expects the midfielder to be available to face Middlesbrough at The Den next Saturday.
