JAMES Vaughan’s 57th minute winner for Huddersfield inflicted a third straight league defeat on Millwall under new manager Steve Lomas.

Lomas made two changes from the side which lost 3-0 at Ipswich last week.

Up front Andy Keogh made way for Jermaine Easter with Jack Smith named as a sub and Alan Dunne returning to the starting XI.

James Henry was switched to the left with Richard Chaplow on the right, while on the bench was keeper Aaran Lee-Barrett, signed on Thursday on a short term deal to act as cover for Stephen Bywater during David Forde’s spell on the treatment table.

Lee Martin was also among the substitutes but there was no place in the final 18 for Liam Feeney.

Easter had the ball in the back of Alex Smithies’ net but referee Oliver Langford had already blown his whistle after spotting a Morison handball.

Nicky Bailey tried his luck from 25 yards and Morison really should have done better when he headed over from six yards after meeting Henry’s cross.

Dunne was harshly adjudged to have conceded a free-kick but Adam Hammill’s delivery was headed over by Vaughan, while at the other end there was nobody to get on the end of Chaplow’s dangerous low ball played across the face the goal.

Shaun Derry’s shot from eight yards was deflected behind for a 25th minute corner following a decent spell of pressure from the hosts.

But Huddersfield countered shortly afterwards and only the quick thinking of Bywater denied Vaughan after he got away from Danny Shittu before trying to chip the keeper.

Morison went close with a header after rising high to connect with a pin-point Dunne delivery and then Martin Paterson blazed an effort over for the Terriers.

Huddersfield were only inches away with their next attack as Oliver Norwood saw his 34th minute attempt from outside of the area just clear the bar.

Bywater did well to keep out Paterson before launching a long clearance, a move which ended with Morison’s header being tipped behind by Smithies.

Morison was again close with a stoppage time header, this one deflected behind for a corner as both sides went in level at the break.

Henry fired about a foot over the bar on 50 minutes after Easter had done well to play the ball back to him from inside the box.

Paterson almost capitalised on a poor back pass from Lowry which Bywater had to scramble behind for a corner, from which Huddersfield broke the deadlock as Vaughan headed home after meeting Hammill’s 57th minute delivery.

Lomas made a double change as Easter and Chaplow came off for Scott McDonald and Lee Martin, much to the disapproval of large sections of the home support, some of whom sang ‘You don’t know what you’re doing’.

This Is Local London: Alan Dunne

Vaughan went for the spectacular with a 65th minute overhead kick that failed to trouble Bywater, although it was good thinking by the former Evertonian who was clearly full of confidence after his goal, something Millwall’s players were obviously lacking.

Adam Clayton’s low drive forced Bywater to get down low to deal with it before Henry came off for Keogh with 20 minutes remaining.

Clayton took too much time on the ball inside the box before Shittu tackled him and cleared the danger.

Dunne delivered an excellent ball into the box but a trio of Millwall team-mates failed to get on the end of it.

Morison headed straight at Smithies in the 83rd minute after connecting with McDonald’s cross, but the effort lacked power to ever seriously concern the Terriers stopper.

Dunne’s injury time shot from 20 yards was tipped behind by Smithies but yet again the Lions failed to make the most of another corner and Bailey volleyed over with virtually the last kick of the game.

No points, no goals - not the start Mr Lomas would have wanted.
