MILLWALL surrendered a two-goal lead at Brighton last night and had to settle for a point in a 2-2 draw.

Chris Wood scored either side of half-time to seemingly put the Lions in control, with the second a wonder-strike from 25 yards.

However, the Seagulls hit back through substitute Kazenga LuaLua and a late spot kick from David Lopez.

It was a cruel blow for high-flying Millwall but boss Kenny Jackett was pleased with his players and was also impressed by the opposition.

“I feel Brighton are the best side we have played, particularly at home,” Jackett revealed.

“They generate a terrific atmosphere here, they pass the ball very well, their movement and substitutes are very strong as well.

“I thought we put on a very good performance, I'm pleased with the display and result.”

The Lions made three changes to side which beat Leicester at The Den on Saturday with Josh Wright, Chris Taylor and Jack Smith all back.

Smith came into the side after Andy Keogh pulled up in the warm-up and this clearly disrupted Jackett’s approach.

“Keogh has a broken toe,” he said.

“We were going to inject it but there was a mix up and it couldn’t happen.

“Unfortunately Andy wasn’t good enough to play and it was very honest of him, it saved me a substitute.”

Speculation surrounded the game as Wall loanee Wood had been linked with a permanent move to either the Lions or Brighton in January from West Brom.

And the New Zealand international may have upped his transfer fee by a few quid after a superb display which saw him net twice.

In the second half Brighton threw the kitchen sink at the visitors and eventually got back into the game thanks to LuaLua’s superb effort with half an hour to go.

The hosts were then awarded an 88th minute penalty after Craig Mackail-Smith went down in the box and Lopez sealed a point for Gus Poyet’s team.

Despite being pegged back in the final minutes of the game, Jackett was impressed with his main man up front who continues to attract attention.

The Millwall manager said: “They were two great goals from Chris Wood - the second was an absolute screamer, it was a terrific one.

"He did tire before the end and it’s tough for him.

"We are very pleased with him, he has fitted in very well.

“It’s the first time I have ever asked him to play up front on his own, which is a tough role, and we are very pleased with him.”

"I don’t think we did enough to beat Brighton tonight, especially on their second half performance.” The Lions now sit sixth in the Championship and face Barnsley at home on Saturday.

Jackett claimed: “It will be a different type of game on Saturday.

“It will be a quieter Den than it was last Saturday against Leicester, as perhaps we were the underdogs.

"People will look at the league position and the pressure will really be on the players on Saturday to make it happen.

“They will have to generate the crowd and the atmosphere, they are capable of that and as well as heart we have quality in the side.”
