Watford confident Udinese trio Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and Fernando Forestieri plus Granada's Daniel Pudil will sign permanently

The Hornets are confident they can secure the permanent signings of Daniel Pudil, Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and Fernando Forestieri in January, the Watford Observer understands.

The quartet have been the most impressive of the 12 loanees who arrived from Udinese and Granada in the summer and news their temporary stays look set to become permanent will be warmly welcomed by supporters.

Watford made 14 loan signings following the Pozzo family’s takeover in the summer and Chelsea midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah is the only one without an option to buy.

So there was always a likelihood several of the loanees would remain beyond this season but securing Pudil, Abdi, Vydra and Forestieri on permanent deals will be a real coup for the Championship side.

Watford’s technical director Gian Luca Nani named Vydra and Forestieri as two players who were keen to sign for the Hornets permanently at last Thursday’s fans’ forum and the Watford Observer understands the club are in advanced talks with the quartet about securing their services.

Nani said: “We try to find players to bring here that really don’t want to go [elsewhere]. They want to stay in Watford and we want to keep these players.

“Last week, players like Vydra and Forestieri and other players told me how ‘I really feel good here, I want to stay here instead of going back and going to other places’.

“It is really good and I’m really proud about that. But if we have the chance to use also the scouting network that we have all around the world [through Udinese] then why not?”

Some have criticised the Hornets’ decision to sign 14 loan players in the summer but chief executive Scott Duxbury stressed they are ‘Watford players’ and they are only loanees due to the new regime’s late arrival at the club.

He said: “The players wanted to come here and if everything works out and we want them to stay then we will make the moves permanent.

“We have options on all of them and it was purely a technicality when the window was closing.

“The game against Charlton away showed their passion; these players want to be here and they are not mercenaries who will suddenly go back. They want to stay and they are Watford players.

“The squad should be smaller, around 25 or 26, and next season that will be the case.

“But all the players who want to stay, and we want to stay, will stay,” he added.

Head coach Gianfranco Zola said that if the loan players “are not good enough or do not fulfil the expectations we have” then they will not sign for the Hornets.

He said: “I am here not because, in all due respect, I want to spend my life in the Championship, which is a very high level.

“I am an ambitious manager and I want us to play at a higher level and at this club there are players who share my ambition.

“That is where we are heading to and the Pozzo family have no interest in Watford playing in the Championship for a long time.”

Duxbury also used the fans’ forum to dismiss claims some of the players were now owned by Udinese, stating “it simply isn’t true, we own all our own players”.

Watford’s CEO and technical director have both stressed they are looking to bring in their own young talent and not just rely on Udinese players in the future.

And the Hornets are extremely close to completing the signing of a 15-year-old boy who Nani claims was wanted by “all the important clubs”.

The Hornets chief executive added: “It is an international boy we found through our scouting network and all the terms have been agreed so it should be completed any day now.”

The pick of the bunch and I do hope that they sign on a permanet basis that will keep the at WFCfor 2 or even 3 seasons. The last thing we need is revolving door of loanees. We need a settled side. On the down side we have to let players go that are not up to the level of the recent imports. e that they find a job in footbal

I dont believe that some of our fringe players have had enough playing time to judge them.Neuton,Beleck,G
eijo,Bia,Battocchio,
Elkstand and most certainly both Cassetti and Anya should be kept on if possible. Most of these players are superior to some Gianfranco inherited.A lot depends on if Tommie Hoban at the moment he is in demand but hopefully we can keep him,
Fernando could become a world class player let alone the other 3. Exciting times still loom.Point to remember----- Southampton battered us last season, and look how badly they are doung now.We do not want to arrive in the Premier only to struggle as we did in the past.

He must be special this 15 year old, if Nani has bothered to talk about him, interesting.

One player I'm surprised hasn't had much game time is Battochio. Already played this season for 1st team for Udinese, yet has only been subjected to a sub v Derby (grim). Italian Under 20 who has been kept out by lightning Yaetes.

The others mentioned, cracking. I'd also have Erkstand over a Neuton at present :-)

Never been so excited in the 35 years following the orns. Such a contrast to the Bassini tenure.

The thing I love so much about most of the new guys is how pleased they are to be here and play for our club, just follow FF on twitter, he even apologised for us not winning against Millwall.

It's only going to get better and better.

For me, Anya is no where near good enough for us. In the cameo he had the other night, he never once had a good run at their left back, who was on a booking. Anya's main attribute is his pace, but what's the point if he's not prepared to use it and get to the by line? Very happy with making Abdi a permenant signing, a real technical centre midfielder who can score goals.

jasonwatford says...

Neuton and Elkastand will be signed up and i hope to start to see Battichio get a game soon so we can get rid of that waste of space Yeats

miked2006 says...

I hope Anya is just low on confidence rather than ability, and that is why he did not take any players on.

I also think we should give Battocchio a go, considering we seem to be lacking a final ball. Other than that, we just need a fast strong striker, unless Bia is that player.

The 15 y/o sounds exciting. Everyone feared for our youth when the Pozzo's took over but actually, we could have an advantage over some premiership teams.

All in all, everything looks great at the moment, but I am with a few posters above and think that next season would be a better plan for promotion than this one. It's all pretty exciting, isn't it?!

I will be delighted if we sign those four players on permanent deals but I really am fascinated by the financial mechanics of such a deal.
Signing those four in normal circumstances would involve an outlay of at least £5/6M whereas our previous financial situation meant that Dickinson was a major signing for £250k (overpriced by £249k).
If we sign them below Market value
it will adversely effect our sister clubs and so is unlikely.
Gino Pozzo has already said that they won't allow their premiership ambitions to put our club at risk but that sort of expenditure is impractical with current attendances. No doubt I will be told it is all part of the Pozzo's investment plan ands I accept that .
I'm not being negative just inquisitive, I realise I am never going to get. Definitive reply
Nani has indicated that we could sign permanently any or all of the players currently on loan which might require a market price investment well in excess of £10M which is even more intriguing.

They are all free transfers (or nominal fee), the terms of contract have to be agreed with each individual player (wages and benefits etc) so no or little outlay.

If they were to be sold outside the Pozzo Group then suggest :

Abdi £2M

Vydra £4M

Pudil £1.5M

Fessi £2M

Outlay of £9.5M, but as part of Pozzo group £nominal

Remember Udinese raised £50M this summer from sale of two players, so no cash issues there.

Also bear in mind that the Pozzo's make their money outside football, so not looking for profits from football. They want money generated by football to stay in the football clubs they own for long term stability. Therefore IF for example Tommie Hoban went to Man Utd in 2 years for £15M, them that £15M stays at Watford !

England is main priority, we are blessed for having the Pozzo's.

When you listen and read the Wobby interview (well done Frank) with Gino, Watford is the perfect club for them, similar size and values to Udin, the word "Community" shines through.

I am also delighted that Udin are sending camera crews over, reporting about the Orns on their website, just shows the sense of sway towards us, I hope Watford reciprocate, we potentially have a wider fan base in including Udin (point I made at Fans Forum aswell as tour to Udin)

We also have to give credit to Duxbury and Nani, whatever the reputation at West Ham, these were the guys that Championed the purchase of Watford.

For the first time in 30 years since GT & EJ glory days, I am v excited to be an Orn

In Frank's interview he states he was v impressed with Gino, "impressive" he states, Frank wouldn't use that word unless he meant it.

I spoke to a couple of senior people at other Championship Clubs this week, I can tell you they are saying everyone has "one eye" on Watford and all state the Pozzo's have nothing but a great reputation ....

I also found out some interesting background as to why Malky left, which may well change alot of our opinions about him and the Cardiff exodus, but I will keep that info until end of the month ......

Dicko : whilst he may not be everyone's cup of tea, we should respect that he did give 100%, and if you were going to war, you'd want him on your side not against you

We have moved in a different direction, but always respect anyone that gave 100% regardless of ability

Dicko was similar to Robbo, all endeavour and passion, difference being Robbo was "one of our own" so we allowed for mistakes.

I wish Dicko well at Pompey, and hope that he gets a permanent move there because they have a great fan base and will relish Dicko's passion

Any Orn that gives 100% deserves a good home

He has shown a desire to come to England, he still have a lot to give but he isn't getting any younger (35), so if he was to make a move before hanging his boots then I would expect so in the not so distant future.

I strongly believe if we get promoted this season for argument sake, that I strongly believe it would be seriously considered.

One thing the Pozzo's know for sure that economically..the potential in England is far greater than Spain & Italy. Who's know what might happen ahead but this is without a doubt exciting times ahead for WFC....embrace & enjoy everyone.

@Holly68Paul

No hiding from me LOL
I think we should have a pizzahut on each corner of the ground.

Pizza Hut? You really want to insult our new owners like that? Pukka Pies and Guiness are as authentically Italian as Pizza Hut.
