Addicks unveil new chief executive

STEVE Waggott has been appointed as Charlton's new chief executive officer.

Mr Waggott, who is currently the chief executive of the Charlton Community Trust, succeeds Peter Varney, who announced in March he intended to leave the club at the end of the season.

He said: "I am very excited and honoured to have been given this opportunity at such a well-regarded football club.

"The south east region will undergo a massive transformation in the next decade and this will provide the football club with an opportunity to further develop its supporter base and to grow the commercial infrastructure of the club.

"I am determined that the club will grasp the opportunities presented to us."

Mr Waggott, who previously spent five years as chief executive of London Leisure College, which is based at The Valley, joined the trust upon its establishment in 2004.

The 53-year-old added: "I am naturally sad to be leaving the trust, but I believe I have left it in a very healthy position and I would like to thank Roger Godsiff and his fellow trustees for the much valued support they have given me over the past four years."

Charlton plc chairman Derek Chappell, who headed the club's appointment panel, said: "We interviewed a number of candidates and were hugely impressed by Steve's energy and enthusiasm for the role.

"He has also done a tremendous job in building the trust into the successful operation it is today."

Mr Chappell added: "Over the next eight weeks he will be working closely with Peter on a detailed handover process and I am very much looking forward to working with him.

"I think we will make a good team and one which will not leave any stone unturned as we work to build a successful football club."

Born in Newcastle, Mr Waggott played for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland County in his youth.

He trained to be a PE teacher before becoming a physical educational lecturer at Woolwich College.

Labour MP Roger Godsiff, chairman of the trust, said: "We are naturally sorry to lose Steve because he has been a superb chief executive and has driven the trust forward to a level beyond all our expectations when it was set up.

"We understand, however, opportunities to become the chief executive of a football club with as great a tradition as Charlton don't occur very often and all of the trustees wish him well with his new appointment."
