Shelvey set to break record
Manager Alan Pardew has vowed to give Jonjo Shelvey his chance
Manager Alan Pardew has vowed to give Jonjo Shelvey his chance

ALAN Pardew has promised Jonjo Shelvey will make his Charlton bow by the end of the season, becoming the club's youngest ever debutant in the process.

The manager declared the England under-16 midfielder, who will only begin full-time training as a first-year scholar next season, "will make his debut in the next two games" after Saturday's loss to Queens Park Rangers.

Shelvey will be 16 years and 59 days this Saturday and should he feature against Barnsley or Coventry City eight days later, he will beat Paul Konchesky's record of 16 years and 93 days.

LEROY Lita was recalled early from his loan spell at Charlton on Monday, with relegation-threatened Reading looking for extra firepower to guarantee their Premier League safety in the season's closing weeks.

CAPTAIN Matt Holland received more than 50 per cent of fans' votes as he was named Charlton's player of the year on Sunday night, beating runner-up Zheng Zhi and Paddy McCarthy to the supporters' club prize.

The delighted Holland, described as a "fantastic servant of the club" by manager Alan Pardew, said: "I've finished in the top three on a few occasions over the years, so it's great to finally win the award."

Goalkeeper Nicky Weaver won the supporters' club's players' player accolade, while the CASC goal of the season went to Luke Varney's first strike in the 2-0 derby win against Crystal Palace at The Valley in February.

TICKETS for Charlton's final home game of the season against Coventry City on May 4 (2pm) are currently on general sale priced £20 for adults, £15 for over-60s and under-21s and £10 for under-18s.

Seats are also available on general sale for Saturday's trip to Barnsley priced £20 for adults and £12 for over-60s and under-18s.

Under-11 places are £6, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

SCOTT Wagstaff was named as a Charlton substitute for the first time last weekend.

Indeed, injuries to Lee Cook, Jerome Thomas and Zheng Zhi have increased the likelihood the club's young player of the year will make his debut before the end of the season.

Thomas hurt his hamstring in training, while Cook limped off against Queens Park Rangers and Zheng sustained a groin problem in the same game.

Nicky Weaver returned after suspension against QPR.

HE MAY be being talked about as a current Charlton first-teamer, but it was only confirmed last week 16-year-old Jonjo Shelvey will become an Addicks academy scholar next season.

Shelvey is one of nine players, four of whom have been with the club since they were nine, to be offered scholarships.

The others are Yado Mambo, Jack Binks, Tamer Tuna, Lewis Perkins, Harry Pell, Carl Jenkinson, Liam Bellamy and Ben Davisson.

Mambo and current first-year scholar Steve Lozano-Calderon scored as the under-18s drew 2-2 with Millwall in their final match of the season on Saturday.

YASSIN Moutaouakil will be banned for Charlton's first match next season after the Addicks failed to reach the Championship play-offs.

Sent off for violent conduct for the reserves on April 7, the Frenchman is banned for the final two games of the current campaign plus the 2008/09 season opener.

YOUNG female footballers can see if they have what it takes to join Charlton's academy and centre of excellence next season when a series of trials are held on May 3 between 10am and 2pm.

The trials will be overseen by women's technical director and former Addicks winger Paul Mortimer.

FANS can live out their dreams by playing at The Valley next month.

The pitch can be hired out from May 16 to May 30 by individuals who want to play on the same surface as their heroes.

Players can also use the home and away changing rooms and invite family and friends to watch.
