Victorious Watford's wonderful Ipswich run continues
Watford’s spirit and perseverance was rewarded as they came from behind to beat Ipswich Town 2-1, stretching their unbeaten record against the Tractor Boys to an incredible 15 games in all competitions.
The Hornets could have taken the lead as early as the fourth minute when Troy Deeney failed to beat keeper Alex McCarthy in a one-on-one situation but Ipswich struck in the 18th minute when Jay Emmanuel-Thomas capitalised on a bad misjudgement by Carl Dickinson.
It should have got even worse for the Hornets just past the half-hour when Emmanuel-Thomas laid a chance on a plate for Michael Chopra but he somehow missed the target from two yards out.
The hosts continued to plug away after the break, getting the upper hand in terms of territory and possession, and they were back on terms in the 71st minute when Sean Murray calmly dispatched his fifth goal in seven games after Deeney had again been denied by McCarthy.
The equaliser firmly swung the game in the Hornets’ favour and nine minutes from time Deeney scored what proved to be the winner with a fine curling finish from a tight angle.
This was Watford’s fifth consecutive victory over their Suffolk opponents and their seventh in succession in all competitions at Vicarage Road against their opponents. Intriguingly, it also moved Sean Dyche’s men to within six points of the play-offs as they moved up to 13th in the table - their highest position since after the first game of the season.
The Hornets may have gone into the game, like their opponents, unbeaten in their last five games but Dyche opted to make two changes from the team that won 2-0 at Bristol City on Tuesday.
The fit-again John Eustace replaced Prince Buaben, while Joe Garner was favoured to Chris Iwelumo as Deeney’s strike partner.
The visitors were immediately on the front foot from the kick-off, with Emmanuel-Thomas having the first shot in the second minute but it struck a team-mate in an offside position.
However, the Hornets really should have taken the lead with their first attempt two minutes later when Garner was found in plenty of space down the left and he centred for Deeney, who had plenty of time to pick his spot but was denied by the legs of McCarthy.
Alex Kacaniklic produced some impressive trickery to get away on the left but his cross did not match the quality of the play that led to it but then the Hornets’ penalty area came under a sustained period of pressure.
First Daryl Murphy had a shot blocked before Emmanuel-Thomas attacked the right side of the area and struck an angled drive that Tomasz Kuszczak had to block behind. From that corner, Murphy had another on-target attempt blocked before a second corner saw the left-sided midfielder glance a header not too far wide of Kuszczak’s left-hand post.
The Irishman continued to pose a threat, heading further wide from his side’s third corner of the match, before coming in off the right flank and curling a left-footed effort wide of Kuszczak’s right-hand post to take his personal attempts count to five inside the opening 12 minutes.
Watford though, weathered that storm and started to ask a few questions of their own, only for them to be punished for a mistake all of their own making in the 18th minute.
There didn’t appear to be too much danger when Andy Drury played the ball in from the left but Dickinson, completely unaware Emmanuel-Thomas was loitering behind him, was indecisive, heading the ball down without any conviction and the former Arsenal player pounced to put the Tractor Boys 1-0 up.
In the left-back’s partial defence though, he did not seem to get a call from Kuszczak when the keeper should have helped his team-mate out but Dickinson should still have nodded the ball behind if he was in any doubt.
The game became increasingly scrappy after the goal but how the Hornets didn’t go two down in the 34th minute only former Vicarage Road loanee Chopra will know.
Again Dickinson was indecisive when Aaron Cresswell’s ball from the left ricocheted off Jonathan Hogg and across to Emmanuel-Thomas, who beat the Hornets’ left-back with ease on the outside before squaring across the six-yard box to the unmarked Chopra, who somehow contrived to put a sitter wide from two yards out.
Having survived that huge let off, Watford mustered just their second attempt when Garner worked the ball into Deeney but McCarthy was equal to his right-footed strike from around 14 yards.
Murphy dragged his sixth effort of the half wide from the edge of the 18-yard box two minutes before the break. But the Hornets had another opening in injury time when a slip from Cresswell let in Garner, who pulled the trigger with his right foot but saw his shot blocked behind.
Dyche made a change at the start of the second half, bringing on Buaben for Hogg, but little of note happened until the 53rd minute when Kacaniklic was checked as he tried to break through but referee Peter Walton played advantage as Deeney took up the play. The striker managed to retain possession and find Kacaniklic, who tried to play a give and go with himself around the defence and managed to get to the ball but McCarthy read the danger.
However, moments after Iwelumo had come on for Garner, the keeper was in trouble after letting Deeney’s close-range effort squirm from his grasp but the referee adjudged a foul had been committed before the Hornets could make the most of the rebound.
Kuszczak held at the second attempt when Emmanuel-Thomas tried to catch the keeper off-guard with a driven free-kick into his near post from the right on the hour before Murray clipped in a cross that Iwelumo, who had to lean back to get to the ball, headed wide.
It was beginning to look like it might be one of those days for the Hornets, only for a young player to continue his hot streak in the 71st minute.
The initial credit must go to Iwelumo and Buaben for fashioning the opportunity for Deeney, who battled past a defender to get in a shot that was blocked by McCarthy but Murray kept his composure to calmly convert the rebound and take his tally to five goals in his last seven appearances.
The equaliser firmly swung the momentum and the Hornets began to up the ante and nine minutes from time they got their reward.
Carlos Edwards sold McCarthy short with an attempted back pass that Deeney latched onto but with his back to goal and the keeper behind him. A lay-off to Kacaniklic seemed the best option but Deeney spun and, from a pretty acute angle, curled the ball over the keeper and a man on the line to make it 2-1.
Ipswich were not finished though, and it took an improvised flick from Nyron Nosworthy to divert a header from substitute Ryan Stevenson over his own crossbar, although Kuszczak was right behind his defender.
The hosts still had four minutes of injury time to see out but they did that without any major scares to ensure Ipswich’s Hornets hoodoo continued.

Well done SD and the boys,Deeney missed a sitter in the 1st half but his goal more than made up for it. great goal plus murrey didn't panic and slotted the ball home very well.

2 excellent goals and you could see the confidence comeback once Murray netted his.
Even Dyche said we were outplayed 1st half so clearly knew what to say at half time and it worked.
Big Chris and Buaben made a difference which is good.
6 points off the play-offs...we can all dream but unlikely I feel.

I am not sure what to make of troy and the other strikers. They are workhorses with no talent in front of goal as demonstrated by Troy missing a sitter that Murray converted and after a superb pass by garner he hit the goalie and yet he somehow conjured the winner with a superb finish.
For me Prince sorted out the game and was man of the match and big Chris came on and thoroughly roughed up the Ipswich defence. Our wingers, keeper and centre backs all contributed but I came away wondering how we held Ipswich to only a goal at half time and yet were so improved in the second half when we competed and got stuck in.
Effort over skill, but three points were great..bring on Leeds but heaven help us if we made the premier division.
Hope Sean starts with Prince and Chris in future games we were so much better with them

Great result. We now appear to have the knack of winning from losing positions. Like others, I'm also looking upwards, but we have a very difficult run in with 6 of our 7 games being against teams in the top 10. It's hard not to think about all the points that we threw away, but I'm really pleased with where we are.

The good news is we play the teams above us in the run in: little chance but we can dream. Put 7 past Leeds. If Forest can we can. Iwelumpo is possibly the funniest footballer I've ever watched. More comical tha LD and that's saying something, but he actually made a +ve difference today, as well as doing a decent impersonation of Nat Lofthouse in the 57 Cup Final, and that ludicrous diving header. He HAS to stay.

Murrey will get better and better and i think play offs are a bit too far. However playing against top half teams could be good as they have more to lose than we do....I wanted dyce to go in october i think he got very lucky with JE injury and playing prince against peterborough and brighton however he seems to av made good changes and the players seem to be happy and responding. Lets just go for it

He's backed Sean wherever he could have. We've signed a classy goalkeeper who we splashed out on when we were already all but safe and could have saved the money (or gone out and bought a new bentley).
We've resisted numerous offers for Marriappa which would, almost certainly, have been accepted by the previous board, bought Nosworthy who is about as good a centre half as we've had in years and generally been able to at least be active in the transfer market.
That being said it's all about what happens on the pitch so the squad and the manager take most of the plaudits don't get me wrong.

The teams made the best of the
conditions but we all know that the pitch is totally unsatisfactory at this level. Without wishing to read too much into the comment I would have thought that SD would be EXPECTING a new pitch to be laid this summer...

Interesting responses above. I would add that the lack of a new playing surface last year was probably a major factor in the departure of MM. Given the remarkable progress made by management and team since the end of October all concerned would be justified in feeling (to put in mildly) let down if the promised new pitch is not laid this summer.

Just before half-time the stats were WFC 1 shot, Ipswich 11 and I thought we were going to lose by a few. I have to say what has impresses me most about SD is that he does seem to a) have the guts and b) make the changes in time when compared to MM. A half time talk and re-jig is often what sorts out the better managers and SD obviously feels confident to ring the changes when needed, not after 80 minutes. On the owner debate currently going on. There is now no time for negativity in any aspect whilst the play offs are the slightest possibility, admittedly it's only a remote chance but let's get behind the whole team, management & owner and do our part!. Like I have said before I am sure there will be other things that Baz does wrong! I just hope it is the small things, like a delay in a pub opening & not turning up at a forum that he does wrong, because lets be honest if that is the worse things he does and the club keeps moving forward, we carry on using the pool of talent from our excellent academy then we surely can all live with that, can't we?

Bringing on big Chris gave us more of an aerial threat, but the other factor was that Watford had one more day to recover from their midweek game: Ipswich couldn't close us down as they had been doing, so we were then able play our football.
Although we are only 5 points off the play-off, allowing for games in hand it is more like 8, and a worse goal difference, so probably beyond us. But who would have thought at the start of the season that this was even a possibility?
Feff asks how AB's team is doing. He has taken Northampton out of the relegation zone and they are now 5 points clear, so doing OK.

My only beef is that S.D always seems to shift both full backs around instead of having the confidence to change one every time we get an injury. Although L.D is not my favorite left back he is certainly better there than on the right. Dickenson although I love his attitude is not playing well and would like to see young Thompson or even Dale Bennet playing at right back keeping Lloyd on the left.
With so many options, it's little wonder that Thompson has gone back out on loan.

After we beat Manky's lot on Easter Monday, we will probably have caught them up despite the millions McTosh has spent! Did you expect that? Also, cast your mind back to the rag tag and bobtail outfit that GT put together in the late nineties. That lot makes today's squad look like world beaters! And what happened? A great run like we are on now took us into the play-offs, and eventaully the Premiership! Outrageous dreams happen! We did it under GT and Boofers. Blackpool did it on a shoestring. For me the worst player on the pitch was Dickinson, everytime I see him (and I can not get to every home game so please free to tell me I am wrong) he has no idea about defending the space behind him - he is always pushed up 5 - 10 yeards ahead of the defensive line and his decision making as to when to break forward is poor. A take no prisoners and get the ball away approach with him seems to turn into a "lets bring the ball down and run with it" tactic when he is in his own penalty area.
Please tell me if I am being harsh but he seems a liability to me and was the cuase of most of our problems on Saturday.
Great team spirit and superior fitness also had me cheering as much as anyone but I would like to see a new left back come into the club in summer or at least Lee Hodson return with LD switching to the left - he is not a great player on the ball but he is certainly good defensively
