5:09pm Saturday 10th December 2011 in Watford FC - Match Reports
Watford were denied a deserved victory over Leeds United as Robert Snodgrass scored a dubious penalty with the last kick of the game.
The first half was an even affair but Michael Kightly's low drive meant the home side went into the break ahead.
The Hornets enjoyed the better of the second half and thought they had secured all three points as Marvin Sordell stepped up to take a penalty in the 89th minute, only to see it saved by Alex McCarthy.
Watford were still on the front foot when Leeds were awarded an extremely dubious penalty with the three minutes of injury time up.
Snodgrass stepped up to score and the final whistle which followed immediately after was met with boos from the home crowd, who recognised their side had deserved the three points.
It was a contest between two of the Championship's in-form sides, with Watford losing just once in the last seven matches and Leeds winning four of their last five games.
The Hornets made just one change from the side which beat Ipswich Town, with match-winner Troy Deeney replacing Chris Iwelumo in the starting XI.
Watford started quite brightly as Deeney had an overhead kick blocked by Sordell and Kightly was only just stopped from bursting through inside the opening five minutes.
The Hornets were on the front foot in the first ten minutes but Leeds have two of the best wingers in the division in Lloyd Sam and Snodgrass. The visitors' first opportunity came when Snodgrass' cross was half cleared by Lee Hodson and Danny Pugh volleyed comfortably over.
Watford sent in several dangerous free kicks and corners early on but Leeds were able to cope with the pressure.
The last game at Vicarage Road was memorable because of Scott Loach's awful error which resulted in Bristol City's equaliser and there was almost another mix-up as Nyron Nosworthy played a pass-back with Loach sprinting towards the edge of the area. The goalkeeper managed to adjust his feet quickly and clear.
The Hornets management would have been well aware of the aerial threat of Lucciano Becchio and he caused a moment of danger as he pulled off to jump with Hodson, but the ball was cleared.
Simon Grayson's men settled into the contest but like their hosts, rarely troubled the opposition goalkeeper. Snodgrass' effort from distance was dragged comfortably wide.
Leeds had a spell of pressure and were on the attack moments before Watford's opener.
Andy Keogh would have been through had Aidy Mariappa not just nicked the ball away with a perfectly-timed tackle. The Hornets then countered with pace and Kightly ignored the pleas of Yeates to drive 30-plus yards, cut inside and fire into the far corner from the edge of the area.
Deeney has spent much of his time in Hertfordshire on the right wing and he was making the most of his opportunity in his favoured position up front; battling hard to win headers, tackles and working the channels. His enthusiasm was also rubbing off on Sordell, who's work rate is questionable at times.
Watford were good value for their lead but their advantage was put in jeopardy five minutes before the break as Loach was nowhere near a looping Paul Connolly cross and then Snodgrass read the goalkeeper's dive, shifted the ball round Loach and curled an effort over.
Another Connolly cross a minute later, following excellent football from Leeds, picked out Becchio in the box but Nosworthy did superbly to flick a header backwards and clear for a throw.
So Watford went into the break ahead and despite having a few worrying moments, they were good value for the one-goal advantage.
The beginning of the second half was a scrappy affair. The first interesting moment came as Loach scuffed a kick straight to Becchio and his first-time effort lobbed over the bar.
Yeates had a deflected shot from distance go wide a minute later for Watford and then McCarthy had little difficulty in saving Deeney's low drive.
Watford should have extended their lead just before the hour mark though when McCarthy slipped as he took a goal kick and the ball went straight to Sordell. The England Under-21 front man burst past Connolly and cut inside Kisnorbo, only to fire over the bar from 12 yards out.
Leeds made a double change soon after and substitute Ross McCormack almost had an immediate impact as he headed Connolly's cross just over the bar.
On the whole, Watford looked comfortable defensively and enjoyed a period of prolonged pressure, without really troubling McCarthy.
Lees was close to bursting through but a combination of Watford defenders managed to scramble clear.
Dyche decided to bring on captain John Eustace with 15 minutes remaining, replacing the excellent Kightly. Eustace went into the middle of a midfield five, with Deeney going wide right.
With just seven minutes of normal time remaining, Leeds had a chance to grab an equaliser when Becchio made space for himself 20 yards from goal but he dragged his effort a yard wide.
Watford had a glorious opportunity to secure the victory when Sordell was bundled over by substitute Mika Vayrynen in the penalty area. But after taking an age to run up to the ball, Sordell's low shot was parried on to the post by McCarthy.
It was Watford who looked most like scoring as Yeates forced McCarthy into a good stop but with the three minutes of injury time up, Eddie Ilderton awarded Leeds a dubious penalty as Nosworthy challenged Vayrynen.
Loach did his best to put Snodgrass off before the kick and went the right way but the winger's spot kick was just above the 'keeper's hand.
The final whistle blew immediately after Leeds' penalty as Watford were denied a deserved three points.

Big game ..rubbish crowd. Not the best ref we have seen down at the vic but certainly not the worst.
Normally I defend Sean but not today. Loach had his normal error and finished up on his behind with Leeds past him but he wasnt under a great deal of pressure and did OK. Yeates won a ball (half tackle) the first from him this season, but the good and the bad were up front today. kightly and deeney worked hard and were a handful for Leeds, Bauben and Hogg did really well but Sordell (ignore the penalty) was ineffective, made few runs, won little and Sean had two forwards on the bench and failed to make a substitution. He has to take the blame, Marvyn had possibly his worst game and was left out there. When he missed the penalty he was a broken man because he cares and felt he had let everybody down. In reality he is young, talented and in need of the occasional rest...Sean gave him no protection and we dropped two points when we should have won comfortably.
So instead of striding across the pitch to have pointless words of blame with the ref, look at your own performance and judgements today Dyche they were below par and it cost us, but then even Fergie makes mistakes.

It does not feel like a point won rather two lost.
I suspect we all would have settled for the draw before the game, but to witness us draw a game we could have been 3 goals to the good is frustrating,
What we can blame us fans for is not helping push our team over the line.
I don't know what more the team could have done today to give the fans something to cheer for, and it was Leeds for Chris of the Vics sake not Donny Rovers. Perhaps we need to have more kids for a quid days to help nurture future fans? Anything has got to be better than looking around at three half full sides and a bunch of self conscious supporters

Nosworthy played the ball not the player, his foot was up high but not high enough to have normally deemed to be high kicking. He did not touch the player, the player faked being kicked by ducking his head down to Nosworthy's boot and was rewarded with a penalty. Nosworthy has been one of the best most consistent players and all he was doing was his job in clearing the ball from a dangerous situation. As for Sordells penalty you are wrong again - I thought it was soft at the time but seeing it on the TV it was totally the correct decision, sufficient contact was made in the box and Sordell went down as a result of the contact rather than a dive. I have to agree with Chris that Sordell was not at the races and whilst if he had scored the penalty people might have forgotten about his performance I do think that SD made a tactical error by not freshening up the attack with 10 - 15 minutes to go to give Leeds something else to think about but it would have been a difficult call and is easy to say in hindsight. And as for Yeates yes he can put a cross, freekick and corner in but it must be embarrassing for him to see someone like Deeney get past players and put crosses in from the dead ball line when we are still to see Yeates the winger do the same - very frustrating especially as we have Hodson who is willing and able to get forward but can't do it enough due to Yeate's lack of movement. Yeate's is a luxury player and unfortunately we do not have a strong enough team accross the othe 9 outfield players to afford the luxury of just his dead ball skills.

SD has been just fine lately, and we nearly beat one of the promo favourites, and we still have only lost 1 in 8. Leave SD alone for heaven's sake!
The real villain was Nosworthy for such a reckless head-high tackle on the edge of the box, with no real danger, and all of this in the 94th minute!!
Where do experienced players such as him get these mad rushes of blood to the head from??
Even Grayson admits Leeds got away with a lucky point! So what does that say?
It says we fear no one in this division on current form, and the most in-form "away" team in the league got away with murder on this occasion against a very spirited Watford display!
The ref was okay btw. If he was so pro-Leeds, as many are claiming, he would not have given us a very soft penalty to make it 2-0 with just two mins left for play!
Also, Deeney has a fantastic work rate which we all admire, but I am afraid he will never increase our scoring options. His scoring record was quite poor at Walsall, and it is even worse at the Vic!!!

Hopefully the missed penalty will focus him to do better and not send him into his shell. Have watched the Leeds penalty over a few times and Nosworthy's boot did not go towards the players face rather the player moved his head towards Nosworthy's boot. Do not even think contact was made. Boot was not up too high. Definitely looked like a bit of opportunism by the Leeds player. I would have settled for a draw before the game but we totally out played them the whole 90 minutes and should have come away with 3 points. Bauben upped his game today from the last couple of matches. How anyone cannot be fan of Mariappa is beyond me so keep your begrudging "praise" to yourself IDIOT. This guy is already player of the season & whilst he is nailed on to go in January & the best of luck to him for all he has given , he should be the first player to receive the award after leaving the club. BEYOND BELIEF Both penalties I thought - was beyond consoling at the time but on reflection a great performance. Those of you decrying going 5 in midfield - the correct decision IMAO - will be the same ones moaning next time that we did not keep things tight. Bad tactics did not lose us the game - it was an honest mistake by a player who gave 100% & not just in this game How the football league paper can award a 5 out of 10 to Deeney is a joke although they reckon Nosworthy tripped the players ankle for the Leeds pen - says it all!!! I did ask you for some more pantyhose a couple of days ago, as I am getting a little low for Xmas.
Any news on them? Can I pop into the salon or the Venture, and collect some from you?
If I do not see you before, have a good 'un this yuletide season (even though you do not believe in the true meaning of CHRISTmas), and let's all get ready to give old Manky a festive stuffing on Boxing Day!!

Firstly, I have no doubt we controlled the game throughout and finished up with a draw, because we gave a penalty away...and having watched it several times it was without doubt a penalty. Why did we draw...simple we didn't score enough goals. The main culprit was MS who had two great chances and the penalty. I dont want to get on the back of MS who i think has the chance of becoming a very good player but at his age he will have some bad games and will still need resting from what is a very hard and exhausting position to play. That is why we have substitutes including two strikers on the bench. Sean failed to use either and then took off a tiring Kightly to replace him with a more defensive player thus handing the initative to leeds and we paid the penalty. BTW I did play to a good standard in amateur football. So if you disagree in future try not to be so rude, don't make assumptions and if you think MS had a good game by his standards fine but if you feel he was well below that level and the team in general played really well explain why Sean persisted with him.

So GF don't disagree with much of what you say but ignoring the missed penalty did you think MS had a good game...if not why wasnt he substituted And hogg and eustace together does not work well....too alike

But do think Sordell should have come off with 10 to 15 minutes to go as he was having an off day and just see whether CI or JB could unsettle Leeds for the last bit of the game - nothing to do with Sordell missing the penalty. If Sordell is on the pitch and he is the given penalty taker he should take the penalty - whether he is the right player to take the penalties I can't really say - we have so few penalties we don't have a regular penalty taker anyway!

Hogg and Eustace should not start together. But there is no reason why they cannot finish a game together if the situation, and SD, dictates.
