Watford denied three points by Leeds United's injury-time penalty

Excellent Watford denied by injury-time penalty Excellent Watford denied by injury-time penalty

Watford were denied a deserved victory over Leeds United as Robert Snodgrass scored a dubious penalty with the last kick of the game.

The first half was an even affair but Michael Kightly's low drive meant the home side went into the break ahead.

The Hornets enjoyed the better of the second half and thought they had secured all three points as Marvin Sordell stepped up to take a penalty in the 89th minute, only to see it saved by Alex McCarthy.

Watford were still on the front foot when Leeds were awarded an extremely dubious penalty with the three minutes of injury time up.

Snodgrass stepped up to score and the final whistle which followed immediately after was met with boos from the home crowd, who recognised their side had deserved the three points.

It was a contest between two of the Championship's in-form sides, with Watford losing just once in the last seven matches and Leeds winning four of their last five games.

The Hornets made just one change from the side which beat Ipswich Town, with match-winner Troy Deeney replacing Chris Iwelumo in the starting XI.

Watford started quite brightly as Deeney had an overhead kick blocked by Sordell and Kightly was only just stopped from bursting through inside the opening five minutes.

The Hornets were on the front foot in the first ten minutes but Leeds have two of the best wingers in the division in Lloyd Sam and Snodgrass. The visitors' first opportunity came when Snodgrass' cross was half cleared by Lee Hodson and Danny Pugh volleyed comfortably over.

Watford sent in several dangerous free kicks and corners early on but Leeds were able to cope with the pressure.

The last game at Vicarage Road was memorable because of Scott Loach's awful error which resulted in Bristol City's equaliser and there was almost another mix-up as Nyron Nosworthy played a pass-back with Loach sprinting towards the edge of the area. The goalkeeper managed to adjust his feet quickly and clear.

The Hornets management would have been well aware of the aerial threat of Lucciano Becchio and he caused a moment of danger as he pulled off to jump with Hodson, but the ball was cleared.

Simon Grayson's men settled into the contest but like their hosts, rarely troubled the opposition goalkeeper. Snodgrass' effort from distance was dragged comfortably wide.

Leeds had a spell of pressure and were on the attack moments before Watford's opener.

Andy Keogh would have been through had Aidy Mariappa not just nicked the ball away with a perfectly-timed tackle. The Hornets then countered with pace and Kightly ignored the pleas of Yeates to drive 30-plus yards, cut inside and fire into the far corner from the edge of the area.

Deeney has spent much of his time in Hertfordshire on the right wing and he was making the most of his opportunity in his favoured position up front; battling hard to win headers, tackles and working the channels. His enthusiasm was also rubbing off on Sordell, who's work rate is questionable at times.

Watford were good value for their lead but their advantage was put in jeopardy five minutes before the break as Loach was nowhere near a looping Paul Connolly cross and then Snodgrass read the goalkeeper's dive, shifted the ball round Loach and curled an effort over.

Another Connolly cross a minute later, following excellent football from Leeds, picked out Becchio in the box but Nosworthy did superbly to flick a header backwards and clear for a throw.

So Watford went into the break ahead and despite having a few worrying moments, they were good value for the one-goal advantage.

The beginning of the second half was a scrappy affair. The first interesting moment came as Loach scuffed a kick straight to Becchio and his first-time effort lobbed over the bar.

Yeates had a deflected shot from distance go wide a minute later for Watford and then McCarthy had little difficulty in saving Deeney's low drive.

Watford should have extended their lead just before the hour mark though when McCarthy slipped as he took a goal kick and the ball went straight to Sordell. The England Under-21 front man burst past Connolly and cut inside Kisnorbo, only to fire over the bar from 12 yards out.

Leeds made a double change soon after and substitute Ross McCormack almost had an immediate impact as he headed Connolly's cross just over the bar.

On the whole, Watford looked comfortable defensively and enjoyed a period of prolonged pressure, without really troubling McCarthy.

Lees was close to bursting through but a combination of Watford defenders managed to scramble clear.

Dyche decided to bring on captain John Eustace with 15 minutes remaining, replacing the excellent Kightly. Eustace went into the middle of a midfield five, with Deeney going wide right.

With just seven minutes of normal time remaining, Leeds had a chance to grab an equaliser when Becchio made space for himself 20 yards from goal but he dragged his effort a yard wide.

Watford had a glorious opportunity to secure the victory when Sordell was bundled over by substitute Mika Vayrynen in the penalty area. But after taking an age to run up to the ball, Sordell's low shot was parried on to the post by McCarthy.

It was Watford who looked most like scoring as Yeates forced McCarthy into a good stop but with the three minutes of injury time up, Eddie Ilderton awarded Leeds a dubious penalty as Nosworthy challenged Vayrynen.

Loach did his best to put Snodgrass off before the kick and went the right way but the winger's spot kick was just above the 'keeper's hand.

The final whistle blew immediately after Leeds' penalty as Watford were denied a deserved three points.

I hate football sometimes! Great performance, Mariappa has to be one of the best if not the best centre back outside of the Premiership at the moment. Troy showed us why he should play up front as well! Marv will be gutted but we have to learn from this, sometimes its better to keep the ball than go for goal in the latter stages. Positive signs though.

Very unjust, not the pen decision but the result, deserved the win. Could prove pivotal to which way our season goes now. I think it's fair to say Coventry are down though! Why can't we score at the rookery end? No goals there since millwall in sept!

It was a penalty, nothing to do with our mental state you berk.

Certainly deserved the win today, the leeds penalty was in the 95th minute according to the bbc website...where the ref got another 2minutes from is beyond me although he certainly gave leeds there fair share of decisions, not sure if it was a pen but unfortunatly marvin had an awful game today, should of scored when the keeper made a hash of his kick, keeps falling over for no reason and should have a look at the shift deeney did....somebody needs to tell him to buck his idea's up, stop trying to beat 3/4 people and look for the simple pass...im afraid being in the u21's has not done us any favours

Don't blame the Ref. He had a good game. No bookings and let it flow which is why it was the most entertaining match at Vicarage road this season. We lost two points because Marvin Sordell squandered numerous chances including the penalty. They would not have come back from 2-0 down. Learn and move on.

It was definate penalty nosworthy nearly took his head off , the stupid thing is that was the only mistake the defence made the whole game. Hodson is looking vey solid so is Dickinson . Marripia is in a league of his own and midfield was brillant but looked clueless when kightly came off. If only deeney nee how to pass and shoot then he would be faultless but his work rate is brilliant he won more headers that game than iwelumo has done ever at watford , whereas we come to sordell! He wasted too many chances and then missed the penalty but he looked distraught at the end of the game. But when sordell doesn't turn up then we have no poachers to wick on , evan garner wasn't on the bench . Overall collective performance was brilliant and we were robbed today , just hope kightly is injured as there were a lot of crazy hand jestures going on as he wanted to come off

Brilliant performance but gutted that we were robbed right at the end by a poor Leeds team. The referee was truly awful, even if it was a penalty. So many bad decisions like giving a goal kick when the ball clearly hits a Leeds player. You could tell if anyone was going to lose this game for us it would be him. Big game ..rubbish crowd. Not the best ref we have seen down at the vic but certainly not the worst.

Normally I defend Sean but not today. Loach had his normal error and finished up on his behind with Leeds past him but he wasnt under a great deal of pressure and did OK. Yeates won a ball (half tackle) the first from him this season, but the good and the bad were up front today. kightly and deeney worked hard and were a handful for Leeds, Bauben and Hogg did really well but Sordell (ignore the penalty) was ineffective, made few runs, won little and Sean had two forwards on the bench and failed to make a substitution. He has to take the blame, Marvyn had possibly his worst game and was left out there. When he missed the penalty he was a broken man because he cares and felt he had let everybody down. In reality he is young, talented and in need of the occasional rest...Sean gave him no protection and we dropped two points when we should have won comfortably.
So instead of striding across the pitch to have pointless words of blame with the ref, look at your own performance and judgements today Dyche they were below par and it cost us, but then even Fergie makes mistakes.

It's now taken for granted that we have the most passionless, quietist crowd in football, but why are we so low in number this season? (11,500 today on the back of a good run) Is it; a) no faith in the manager and quality of football? b) no faith in the suspicious and mute owner? c) £26 matchday price is too much?

Casterbridge says...
8:53pm Sat 10 Dec 11

Estuary Hornet, the penalty was awarded after 2m47s of injury time. The referee is then correct to allow time for the penalty kick to be taken. However, had Loach parried the ball, and it was put in at the second attempt, the goal should not stand.

It was not Watford's mental state that was the problem, but that Sordell was nearly out on his feet. Even though he was the designated penalty taker, there is a case for the captain and/or manager to turn to someone fresh, in this case Eustace.

And before anyone thinks that I'm getting at Sordell, as the report suggests he'd worked much harder in this game off Deeney than he ever did off Iwelumo.

But that said, it would have made sense to put Big Chris on towards the end, both to take up some time and to provide a target who could hold the ball up out of defence.

Complicated old game, isn't it - and much easier to manage with 20/20 hindsight! If we continue to play as we did today, though, the only way is up.

yep it has been noted that Watford have possibly the quietest and passionless supporters in football, it had been a moot point since GTs drive to turn us into a family club

Crowd was 466 less than last year's fixture. Given that ST sales were down by more than a thousand, and the fact that we are a year further into a grim recession, I would say not too bad.

Crowd about what I would have expected - there's just not a lot of cash about, simple as that.

Didn't have a good view of their penalty so can't comment. Presumably the penalty was awarded within the 3 extra minutes and the goal time then reflects the time for the penalty. Personally, I wonder where even the 3 minutes came from as injuries and substitutions were limited - this seems to have become the default time added on.

However, the defining moment that blew it for us was Sordell's appalling penalty. I didn't think he was even going to get around to actually kicking the thing. He stuttered so much, maybe he wanted the ref to blow for a re-take. Just awful - maybe it was a job for Eustace as he was much fresher.

One of those horrible frustrating days where we didn't kill off a game we should have won comfortably. Ridiculous that Leeds are in a play-off spot.

as bad as the ref was he was not the one that skied the ball in to the crowd with only the keeper to beat, or missed a penalty 2 minutes from time, or dribbled the ball into the keepers hands for him to consequently launch the ball upfield for them to get their penalty (which incidentally my son timed at 2 mins 50 seconds in to stoppage time).
We played well & fully deserved to beat a less than average Leeds team, have to say Marriappa again outstanding, but Marv - oh dear!!

Not sure where you was sitting my friend but from my position in the upper Rous and many others around us that, was never a pen. It seemed as though the ref had this game as a score draw on his coupon!
The idiot in orange I believe was an ex rugby union official which explains many of his decisions for Leeds very physical approach to this game. Hoof and kick em.
Marv should have buried the game in any event and had chances before the pen.

Gutted. Totally outplayed a form team. Would have to say Sordell was not really at the races today which is a shame as he definitely has a lot of talent. Hopefully the missed penalty will focus him to do better and not send him into his shell. Have watched the Leeds penalty over a few times and Nosworthy's boot did not go towards the players face rather the player moved his head towards Nosworthy's boot. Do not even think contact was made. Boot was not up too high. Definitely looked like a bit of opportunism by the Leeds player. I would have settled for a draw before the game but we totally out played them the whole 90 minutes and should have come away with 3 points. Deeney whilst maybe not the long term answer definitely caused some problems and gave Kightly additional options. Not always a fan of Marriappa but thought he had an excellent game although he still tends to leave Dickinson exposed whereas Nosworthy always manages to cover Hodson. Hogg was fantastic and kept it going the full 90 minutes. Bauben upped his game today from the last couple of matches.

I suspect we all would have settled for the draw before the game, but to witness us draw a game we could have been 3 goals to the good is frustrating,
What we can blame us fans for is not helping push our team over the line.

I remember us at Wembley in '84 out singing Everton and hundreds of home and away (even the old Ninian Park on a cold and wet Wednesday night) when we sang our hearts out for the club. If Sordell had put the penalty away, as he is very well paid to do, you would not be criticising SD, but talking about another great win!!

SD has been just fine lately, and we nearly beat one of the promo favourites, and we still have only lost 1 in 8. Leave SD alone for heaven's sake!

The real villain was Nosworthy for such a reckless head-high tackle on the edge of the box, with no real danger, and all of this in the 94th minute!!

Where do experienced players such as him get these mad rushes of blood to the head from??

Even Grayson admits Leeds got away with a lucky point! So what does that say?

It says we fear no one in this division on current form, and the most in-form "away" team in the league got away with murder on this occasion against a very spirited Watford display!

The ref was okay btw. If he was so pro-Leeds, as many are claiming, he would not have given us a very soft penalty to make it 2-0 with just two mins left for play!

Also, Deeney has a fantastic work rate which we all admire, but I am afraid he will never increase our scoring options. His scoring record was quite poor at Walsall, and it is even worse at the Vic!!!

morning SAH It does not feel like a point won rather two lost. I suspect we all would have settled for the draw before the game, but to witness us draw a game we could have been 3 goals to the good is frustrating, What we can blame us fans for is not helping push our team over the line. I don't know what more the team could have done today to give the fans something to cheer for, and it was Leeds for Chris of the Vics sake not Donny Rovers. Perhaps we need to have more kids for a quid days to help nurture future fans? Anything has got to be better than looking around at three half full sides and a bunch of self conscious supporters The team deserved supporting yesterday, they did not get it.
Watcha LD, howzit? Ouch, that low level of support is not something that I have witnessed in the past. I remember us at Wembley in '84 out singing Everton and hundreds of home and away (even the old Ninian Park on a cold and wet Wednesday night) when we sang our hearts out for the club. Happy days and let's hope we can get back to that again before too long. Have a good 'un.
The away support has always been better, and especially on big occasions like Cup Finals, Championship Finals, and vitally important fixtures!

The reason for this, is that at away grounds, all the singers and those who want to get behind the team can sit or stand together, as seat numbers very rarely apply.

WFC need to designate an area in the central Rookery (or maybe even in the central Lower Rous area) where supporters can congregate without seat numbers, with a view to making a decent noise!

Our best noise levels have always come in times when the chanters could get together, even when the "home end" was an uncovered Vic Rd end!

Also pay-on-the day cash turnstyles will bring a few of the missing supporters back, as there is a lot of hassle to book tickets in advance, and also queue at the ticket office!

BTW, I thought the support and noise level was quite good yesterday, certainly better than at some home games this season!

The trouble is, teams like Leeds have large numbers and are very vocal. We can never match them, but it was a lot better yesterday!

First of all have to say very well done to the team on an almost faultless display, such a sickening end

However a couple of points for the management team

Why when after around 80 minutes of total domination with a system that was working perfectly do you change the whole thing ! Yes Kightley was knackered and needed subbing BUT why bring on Eustace who promptly goes into deep midfield, leave sordell upfront on his own!! and drop Deeney back deep aswell, why not bring on Beattie who was left sided for a start, attack minded and keep the same shape !!!

we had Leeds terrified but we went defensive, invited them onto us, had too many men back and getting in eachothers way, a mistake inevitably happens as so often does with Watford late on and we throw away two absolutley crucial points wil we ever learn or should i say will our coaching team ever learn

Well done though to Deeney and Hogg in particular FUNNY how playing players in there correct positions makes all the difference but how frustrating that after nearly two years Deeney finally gets to play upfront and what a game he had a total nuisance throughout , well at least until Dyche put him on the wing AGAIN !!

Mackay and Dyche must take some blame for the total waste of Deeneys ability over last 2 years at least Dyche you have time to sort that out

Well done to Marriappa aswell brilliant again, cannot say i am looking forward to January when no doubt Bassini will sell Marraippa and Sordell and we lose Kightley and Nosworthy !

But i suppose all will be forgiven as long as we beat CARDIFF on boxing day Mr Dyche be under no illusions this is the game we fans want won the most losing is not an option over to you !!!!

Too gutted to talk about this really....Should have been 3 points with a great display, what were you thinking Marv. Would rather welly the bloody thing down the middle as 9 times out of 10 the keeper will go one way or the other. I hope he learns from this and looks at how Snograss took his.

Best we now put this behind us and look forward to the next game. However they should be proud of the performance.

Agree re attendence or should I say support. Far too many attend but are silent throughout. You do not need too many to make a noise, just for a joint effort. Look how much more noise Leeds made and with what 2000 tops, therefore the other 10000 should be able to totally drwo them out.

Ruined my weekend :o(

Agree that bringing Eustace on was not a good idea. If Kightly was knackered, then Beattie was the obvious substitute. However, we were unlucky yesterday and that is all there is to say. Sordell missed a penalty. Other have missed penalties before him and doubtless others will in the future. You cannot condemn Sordell for yesterday. He did not play well generally but he is still one of our best players. The Leeds penalty was fair. The referee was right on this occasion, even if wrong on others. Let's look on the bright side. The defence now looks good. Hogg is excellent. Deeney is beginning to look like the player for whom we paid a lot of money. Please, SD, do nt change the team. Keep Eustace on the bench; don't bring back Doyley; take your time in getting Taylor fit again. Send Iwelumo out on loan! Where, by the way, are Garner and Forsyth. How long before McGinn is fit again? Middle of the table is my prediction now - and that is good!

You obviously have not seen the penalty incident on the TV. Nosworthy played the ball not the player, his foot was up high but not high enough to have normally deemed to be high kicking. He did not touch the player, the player faked being kicked by ducking his head down to Nosworthy's boot and was rewarded with a penalty. Nosworthy has been one of the best most consistent players and all he was doing was his job in clearing the ball from a dangerous situation. As for Sordells penalty you are wrong again - I thought it was soft at the time but seeing it on the TV it was totally the correct decision, sufficient contact was made in the box and Sordell went down as a result of the contact rather than a dive. I have to agree with Chris that Sordell was not at the races and whilst if he had scored the penalty people might have forgotten about his performance I do think that SD made a tactical error by not freshening up the attack with 10 - 15 minutes to go to give Leeds something else to think about but it would have been a difficult call and is easy to say in hindsight. And as for Yeates yes he can put a cross, freekick and corner in but it must be embarrassing for him to see someone like Deeney get past players and put crosses in from the dead ball line when we are still to see Yeates the winger do the same - very frustrating especially as we have Hodson who is willing and able to get forward but can't do it enough due to Yeate's lack of movement. Yeate's is a luxury player and unfortunately we do not have a strong enough team accross the othe 9 outfield players to afford the luxury of just his dead ball skills.

The 5 minutes was when the penalty went into the net. As you say, it was conceded just within "at least 3 minutes", but the ref is correct to allow time for the penalty to be taken.

Anyone who saw Mariappa thrash in a superb penalty at Bristol Rovers earlier this season should be in no doubt that he is the man for the occasion!

After seeing that, I thought he would be the natural penalty taker for the season. I do not think Sordell even volunteered to take one, unless he was down to take the fifth (which was ultimately unnecessary).

DG was not very good at pens either, and I fear young Sordell will go down the same route with his in-decisive approach!

And why is GrahamWFC slating anyone who has criticised Mapps on this thread?

He must be in dreamland as usual, for I can see no reference to any negative comments re the outstanding Mapps!

There was a significant factor in this game that bodes well for the rest of the season. It is game management.

To often in recent years Watford have attempted to protect leads with 4 centre backs strung across the six yard box. This time we kept our shape ( even Dickinson !) and thus were able to avoid being penned in ! And Leeds were never able to camp in our half with defenders on the half way line.

More of same please.

How can you call me an IDIOT. I am entitled to my opinion and I believe I made a valid point that AM whilst his positioning for heading the ball and tackling players is good he does have a tendency to not cover the left back position and leave Dickinson exposed. Some of the flack that Dickinson gets is justified but some of the time is because he is having to cover to big a gap which does not seem to be happening between Hodson & Nosworthy. As for player of the season I think Hogg ahould and will be in contention as he has made such a difference to midfield since joining us and we have been leaking goals even with AM in defence and there is no coincidence that this has improved dramatically since Nosworty has joined us so maybe you are being a bit blinkered.

I will just explain to those that obviously have very little common sense! If a referee gives 4 minutes injury time (and there was plenty of time wasting going on in the later stages of the second half) and a penalty is awarded just into the 3rd minute of that injury time, the referee then stops his watch. Indeed he stops his watch for any time that he feels is correct even within the injury time. The BBC however do not stop their watches so is it not obvious that a penalty awarded this late would eventually be scored just 90 seconds or so after the incident? Also take into account the bit of protesting and the BBC may well have classed it as 96mins. There we are lesson over, but really I should not have to.
However, that is the worst I have seen Leeds play this season (Blackpool apart) and you did deserve to win on the day but get over it, we have had to many times when we have been the better team. Good luck for the rest of the season. From a Northern Monkey!

Thank you both. I was not expecting anything offensive from such an inocuous piece but I guess I should have known better. Trouble is you speak to 100 people and they all seem to have seen a different game to you allbeit too different degrees - very rarely can you get to agree 100% with someone else. Guees it puts it in to perspective how difficult SD's job is given what he has available to him.

Thanks for your post stonemonkey and all the best to you guys too

I think you meant "stocking" dear old Muton, but as it is the festive season of goodwill to everyone, we must accept the odd typo!

I did ask you for some more pantyhose a couple of days ago, as I am getting a little low for Xmas.

Any news on them? Can I pop into the salon or the Venture, and collect some from you?

If I do not see you before, have a good 'un this yuletide season (even though you do not believe in the true meaning of CHRISTmas), and let's all get ready to give old Manky a festive stuffing on Boxing Day!!

Only one scully your argument/point of view would have more validity if you cut the insults out.

You miss the point I was making in several ways.

Firstly, I have no doubt we controlled the game throughout and finished up with a draw, because we gave a penalty away...and having watched it several times it was without doubt a penalty.

Why did we draw...simple we didn't score enough goals.

The main culprit was MS who had two great chances and the penalty.

I dont want to get on the back of MS who i think has the chance of becoming a very good player but at his age he will have some bad games and will still need resting from what is a very hard and exhausting position to play.

That is why we have substitutes including two strikers on the bench.

Sean failed to use either and then took off a tiring Kightly to replace him with a more defensive player thus handing the initative to leeds and we paid the penalty.

BTW I did play to a good standard in amateur football.

So if you disagree in future try not to be so rude, don't make assumptions and if you think MS had a good game by his standards fine but if you feel he was well below that level and the team in general played really well explain why Sean persisted with him.

SD brought Eustace on at Ipswich when we were a goal down, and he helped win the game!

Eustace for Kightly was not a direct swap, but to shore up a tiring midfield after all of their excellent exersions!

Good decision at the time!

Would have been overlooked completely if Marvin had put away his pen, or NN had not made such a reckless tackle in the 94th minute!!

MS had a poor game, and really cost us the three points.

Hogg and Eustace should not start together.

But there is no reason why they cannot finish a game together if the situation, and SD, dictates.

Agree Eustace coming on was not about Sordell more about concerns about Kightly. Have no problem with that substitution. But do think Sordell should have come off with 10 to 15 minutes to go as he was having an off day and just see whether CI or JB could unsettle Leeds for the last bit of the game - nothing to do with Sordell missing the penalty. If Sordell is on the pitch and he is the given penalty taker he should take the penalty - whether he is the right player to take the penalties I can't really say - we have so few penalties we don't have a regular penalty taker anyway!
