Watford come from behind to beat Ipswich Town 2-1

Watford fought back from a goal down to beat Ipswich Town 2-1 and make it just one defeat in the last seven matches for Sean Dyche’s side.

Both teams missed glorious opportunities in the first half but Keith Andrews' header just before the break meant the struggling Town went in 1-0 ahead.

The Hornets continued to battle and equalised through a Marvin Sordell penalty and Troy Deeney grabbed the winner moments later after coming off the bench.

Ipswich were unfortunate not to grab an equaliser late on but the Hornets held on for all three points.

Watford made just the one change as Craig Beattie's goal on Tuesday night was not enough to secure another staring berth, with Sordell returning to full fitness. Beattie joined Deeney and John Eustace on the bench.

Ipswich went into the game in terrible form with six consecutive defeats and the visitors started the brighter.

Chris Iwelumo forced the returning David Stockdale into a decent stop after ten minutes but a free kick was awarded to Town.

Kightly had a good chance when he was released in the box but his effort was tame and easily stopped by Stockdale.

Watford were regularly finding space in the final third only to then waste their territory with poor crosses and were wasteful in possession.

Sean Dyche’s men should have gone ahead a quarter of an hour in though when neat play on the left released Marvin Sordell and he cut inside, only to then smash over the bar from eight yards. The England Under-21 international had plenty of time to set himself and was totally unmarked. It was a terrible miss.

Ipswich then started to take control and enjoyed a real spell of pressure. Nyron Nosworthy had an afternoon to forget with a host of slip-ups and he was lucky not to concede a penalty when he lunged into a tackle with Jason Scotland.

Town had a couple of efforts blocked and should have taken the lead themselves midway through the first half. Scott Loach saved well from Danny Collins' header and then Scotland smashed the ball over the bar from close range.

Watford were looking nervy at the back and Ipswich punished them two minutes before the break when Daryl Murphy sent over a dangerous cross from the left and Andrews leapt to head into the far corner.

Both sides had very good chances in the opening five minutes of the second half. Firstly, Jonathan Hogg’s mishit shot was scuffed goalwards by Mariappa and Stockdale tipped over the bar. Then moments later, Lee Bowyer flashed an effort across the goal and Scotland was unable to reach it as he slid in.

Ipswich were looking dangerous but it was Watford who again went agonisingly close to scoring – twice in a matter of minutes. Yeates saw his 25-yard free kick rattle the crossbar and Sordell’s back-heel from close range was blocked on the line.

Ipswich had the ball in the back of the net around the hour mark with a side-footed finish by Chopra but it was ruled out as Lee Martin’s cross went out of play before Murphy headed back across goal.

It was end-to-end at times and the visitors had another lucky escape when Loach parried Aaron Cresswell’s free kick back into danger but Chopra was unable to apply the crucial touch inside the six-yard box.

Dyche made a double change with 25 minutes remaining as John Eustace and Deeney came on for the ineffective Prince Buaben and Iwelumo - and it paid off.

The equaliser came courtesy of two players who started the game but had struggled. Kightly and Sordell played a neat one-two and Sonko brought down the Hornets striker for a penalty. Sordell stepped up to send Stockdale the wrong way.

The Hornets completed the comeback five minutes later when superb battling for Carl Dickinson resulted in the left back winning possession on the Ipswich byline and passed to Yeates. His shot was blocked but the ball fell kindly to Deeney and the substitute smashed home from eight yards out to make it 2-1.

Ipswich responded immediately and minutes after Scotland forced Loach into a decent stop, there was a moment of pure chaos in the Hornets’ box. Scotland had a close-range header blocked on the line, a Watford defender then somehow got in the way of Bowyer’s low drive and another effort two yards from goal was stopped.

Watford could have secured the victory as they broke four-on-three but Sordell greedily went for goal himself instead of passing to the unmarked Yeates.

Watford had to endure a nail-biting end to the contest as they scrambled several deliveries clear and Edwards had a goal-bound volley blocked, but the visitors held on to make it one defeat in seven matches.

Well done Watford, good battling performance. ipswich gifted a first goal by Yeates awful header backwards to a blue shirt on the edge of the box.

Subs were good; one thing I didn't like was the chants of Deeney Deeney while Iwelumo was on the pitch. Not only is it not gonna do CI any good, he's well liked by the other players a.d I bet they don't think much of it either.

Great result and comeback which proves the spirit of the team against an out-of form but highly experienced and expensive Ipswich.

Sounds like a great double substitution and I'd expect to see Eustace start instead of Bauben next Saturday against dirty Leeds, great for Deeney to score the winner and I'd like to see him given his chance also.

Well done Sean & the lads , Clap , Clap , Clap!

Good spirit, and for once the ball fell for us in the box. About time too!

Sorry, strummerjoe, but I believe that supporters have every right to call for a sub when the first choice isn't working. They were only echoing what I was calling for at home, but to greater effect!

I suspect that both of the subs will retain their place in the starting line-up v Leeds, with Hogg farther forward as the playmaker.

Well its typical of the Championship to see the botton side win against the leaders.

Only consistent result is us winning against Ipswich..

Well done to Dyche and the boys.

Deeney is finding some scoring form it seems having also come so close to a winner on Tuesday.

Credit where its due...a good win, which looking at games coming up,we badly needed!!
There are worse teams than us in this division, probably at least three of them!!. I just wish some of the signings had included a goalscorer,as MS cant carry us when he leaves in January, and then we will really be up against it because we all know we wont spend more than 250k on a player, and that buys us similar to what we have bought!! I was at the game, and I thought both teams looked fragile. We bossed the first 20 minutes, and then almost seemed to take our foot off the gas as it was so easy, allowing Ipswich into the game increasingly. Then by the end of the half we were one down and clinging on. We had a good 5 mins at the start of the 2nd half, but then Ip-sh*t began imposing themselves on the game again.
The pen, and the double-sub, changed it all. I wasn't certain Marv was touched, although it looked like it, and after we equalised it started to swing back to the format of the first 20. We looked incrEasingly good, and they looked more and more nervous.
Top cameo from Troy.
Great 3 points,

Another fine win to extend our run to four wins, two draws, and one unlucky defeat in the last seven games, yet less than 30 posts!

Amazing!! Says it all about our fickle fans!!

With West Ham and Bris City both losing, we are very near the top of the form league over this period!!

Definitely play-off form, and long may it continue, as SD continues to impress in his ever-improving role as a newbie manager in the hostile world of Championship football!!

And who says the games coming up look tough!

Games against Leeds, Blackpool, Cardiff, Donny, Pompey, Reading, Millwall, Barnsley and Forest!!!

I can see LOADS of points coming from that group of matches, by which time we will not be far off the play-offs!!

My predictions have been very good lately (please note Buckler, Lohman, SAH, Gaddaffi etc), so make fun of my comments at yopur peril!!!!

I am glad sd is turning things around. Who else would we get. He has certainly got passion for the job and seems desperate to impress the fans. The team is much weaker than last year but my impression from what i saw yesterday is we are improving and look like a team. If we get anywhere near the points we got last year under Malky i would say SD has done better than him. The fact we seem to have such little away support and with home crowds dwindling its time for all true horns to get behind the lads and push them on.

Not my point at all. Dyche was going to make the switch anyway - he brought off Buaben at the same time - and he will persist with Iwelumo as long as he sees it tactically the right thing to do. Damaging Iwelumo helps neither him or the team - even if he wants to get shot in January, even on a free, we want a get riddable-of asset.

Buckler it was Chris lead up play that helped Dickinsons goal against Bristol City, he also nearly scored in the opening part of the game against Ipswich, to label him a useless lump is a bit unfair, he is not the most attractive player on his feet but he holds the ball up well gives defences problems and draws them away even without touching the ball, which is his job and he is instrumental in a lot of the lead up play to our goals this season, that is why he has started so many more games compared to Deeney. Truth be told we need another out and out pacey striker to work with Sordell but we don't have one and our weakest point is all our strikers finishes, we just don't posses the quality and Deeney is certainly not the solution or an improvement on the current, hopefully he will get better and as a impact sub he can add a freshness in a game, what I do agree is his introduction may be better used as a early sub rather than some of his late appearances. It is in Deeney's hands to prove himself for a starting berth!!

Iwelumo is not the perfect answer, we all know that, but WFC stats do not lie this season.

When he is part of the team we normally win or draw!

Look at all of those defeats earlier in the season when we had lightweights up front like Garner and Sordell!

Mostly losses you will see!

Big Chris is experienced, he brings balance to the forward line, he is always encouraguing the younger players, he holds the ball up well, and by doing so allows the likes of Sordell, Buaben, Yeates and Kightly to get involved more in attacking roles, and all in all is well worth his place in the team for all of these splendid attributes!

Deeney is a great sub. But he is certainly not the answer up front!

How many goals has he scored? Something like 4 or 5 times in about 50 appearances!

As Prof Plum used to say, "He cannot hit a barn door with a banjo"!!

A little extreme maybe, but I think we get his drift!

Subs were good; one thing I didn't like was the chants of Deeney Deeney while Iwelumo was on the pitch. Not only is it not gonna do CI any good, he's well liked by the other players a.d I bet they don't think much of it either.

Anyway 3 good points - bring on the dirty leeds.
The idea that fans should not call for a sub in case it upsets one of the players on the pitch is hilarious.

Watford’s dull, passionless support is already more akin to a BBC 'Songs of Praise' audience than a football crowd, with attitudes like yours its easy to see why

I was there and chanting for Deeney and i prayed it was Iwelumo that came off. But at no point was anyone calling for him to be the one taken off! As he done nothing all game it had to be him and the 600 fans seemed pretty glad it was!

i'm a relative newbie on here, but one thing strikes me....we can take the **** out of ourselves,it's absolutely true, the majority of posts were calling for s.d.to go,but, fair play, watfords true supporters give credit when due. the fact that mr.bassini and co bought OURclub for around £440k,less than the price of a decent championship player, would seem to indicate a total lack of ambition.personally,
i think the team has done really well, considering the,"bigger",clubs in this division.feel a bit sorry for graham taylor, remember, when he took us to the prem, first time round,he left the club£7million in the black, and we are talking15 years ago!!wonder what happened to the £40-50,million,that swelled the clubs coffers, when we went up again under aidy ??

I am just very thankful that you are not the manager of our club! Over the past 12 months you have called for the heads of Bas (and all of his predecessors), SD, MM, Loach, Gilmartin, Hodson, Doyley, Henderson, Mapps, Iwelumo, Buaben, Forsyth, Yeates, Mirfin, Nosworthy (even before he kicked a ball for us), Bennett, and a few others as well!!! Let us leave it to the experts, shall we? Notably Bas and SD who have taken us to second place in the current form tables, after our great run over the last seven games!!
If i was the manager you would be all over me like a rash even if we were bottom of the table without a point! Thats the sort of do gooda you are. For the facts: on that made up list of yours only mapps and nosworthy worthy of a starting place. The rest well wont even bother going there!
See the post from Strummerjoe above!

I had forgotten you were calling Deeney all the names under the sun last season!

Now you are chanting his name!!

How fickle you are! Must be something to do with your salon by the Venture!!

Who knows, before long, we might be enjoying some real debate on this site without slagging each other off just because we happen to disagree.
I am not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but I am quite happy to stop the silly comments, and just comment on how we can support the glory boys up the league over Xmas and the New Year.
No, not being sarcastic at all. OK, you got a deal but you have to allow for opposing views as do I without getting personal. You also have to allow for the fact that WFC have fans all over the world and distance needn't necessarily preclude comment. This has been a bit of a phobia for you in the past.

You sir obviously cherry pick your own views as the majority of mine and others are not attacking other commentators criticism we are attacking the dumb, stupid, childish, unproductive, non constructive posts that give no genuine input to this comment board like the one above, on a subject very close to our hearts. In fact just in this comment thread SAH & Buckler have had posts deleted, what does that tell you! I have through my many comments in my opinion pointed out team weakness poor performance, team improvements wanted, poor management decision, poor PR of the club, but also always support what we have at the moment and trying to do with the resources we have and what we do right and defend what others think is not right or incorrect or negative with my and others views.

garston orn, I would like Tommy Smith on loan, I think he would be a good option from the bench, but like you say because he has not had the games it may take some starts for him to get back into the groove if we did take him on loan. He certainly would add an option for crosses into the area for big Chris, and one thing for sure with Tommy he gives 100% when he play's.

Would be a great loan signing to have Tommy replace Kightly when he goes back to Wolves next month.

Cannot see Warnock letting us have him, however, for he has not been a great friend to WFC over the years!

Even stopped Helguson coming back on loan last season, but who can blame him on that one! Not only helped them to promo, but is also now scoring for fun in the Prem!

Warnock also probably needs Smithy for the latter stages of the season when injuries and suspensions kick in, but it certainly is a very nice dream!!

Yes Luton, we quite like it when the above mentioned say "good win, nice three points" etc. That is great!

What annoys some of us "clappers" is that if we lose, or draw away at Donny who have just beaten the leaders, you lot post about five or six times each with disparaging comments!

That is why the postings reach around the 150 mark, or sometimes even over 200!!

Some of the praise is also very grudging, particularly in Buckler's case, as he always has to include a moan about someone, whether it be Iwelumo, Beattie, Loachy, SD, Bas, or whoever!

You used to be quite good at a reasoned debate, and still are to a degree, despite fervent defensive responses to any attack on your fellow baldy!

Come on! SAH has agreed to debate sensibly from now on. You are also capable of this. I would like to think that Buckler and Cobweb could do the same, but I have my doubts over these two!
