Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Michael Kightly sets Watford on way to win over Portsmouth

Three home wins on spin for Hornets Three home wins on spin for Hornets

Watford recorded their third straight home victory this afternoon with a deserved and largely comfortable 2-0 win over Portsmouth.

The Hornets got off to the ideal start when the returning Michael Kightly fired home the opener inside two minutes and after missing a number of other opportunities to double the lead, the second arrived at the end of the first half when Marvin Sordell volleyed in a Mark Yeates corner.

Apart from the occasional moment, Watford were comfortable at the back and were good value for a clean sheet, while they had a number of other opportunities to increase their lead.

Sean Dyche made just the one change from the side that was beaten at Middlesbrough last time out, with Kightly making his first start in five games at the expense of Troy Deeney. John Eustace was fit again after his back problem but he had to settle for a place on the bench.

Kightly was involved from the off, attacking Greg Halford down the left before sending over a deep cross that Yeates headed back into the danger zone but Chris Iwelumo, with his back to goal, couldn’t make a good enough contact on his attempted flick.

But the on-loan Wolves winger’s next contribution was decisive.

Kightly again attacked the Pompey right-back, this time going inside before hitting a right-footed shot that bounced before beating the very late dive of the presumably unsighted Stephen Henderson at his near post to give the Hornets the lead after just 80 seconds.

The visitors responded, with Luke Varney hitting a dangerous low cross from the left across the six-yard box before striking a tame right-footed effort that was comfortably dealt with by Scott Loach.

Watford’s next opening came in the tenth minute when, following a throw from the right, Lee Hodson’s ball into the box was laid off by Prince Buaben to Sordell, who returned it to the midfielder but his rising left-footed strike cleared the bar.

It took a good defensive header from Jason Pearce to prevent Iwelumo from having a clear header from a Hodson cross before Kightly wasn’t far away from doubling his and his side’s tally with a right-footed snap-shot that went just the wrong side of Henderson’s right-hand upright after a Carl Dicksinon throw from the left had been half-cleared.

The Hornets’ good start continued, with Sordell seeing an early strike deflected through to the diving Henderson and then Dickinson did well to find Kightly before the latter played a great centre across the six-yard box that only needed a touch. Sordell also struck a decent opportunity over the top as the hosts’ search for a second goal continued.

Henderson was pressed into action in the 31st minute when he had to tip what started out as a cross from Yeates over his own bar but Nyron Nosworthy made a superb tackle soon after to prevent Varney from being clean through on goal after being played in by Dave Kitson.

However, the Sunderland loanee almost paid the price for going to the other end of the spectrum moments later when his lapse left Varney free on goal but, fortunately for the Hornets, the flag went up for offside, even though the Pompey striker put the opportunity wide.

Adrian Mariappa also did well to clear a dangerous flick-on from a Portsmouth free-kick as the opening period drew to a close – but there was still enough time for Watford to deservedly double their lead in the last minute of the first 45.

It came from the Hornets’ second corner of the match which, from the right, was hit beyond the far post to the edge of the six-yard box where Sordell connected with a controlled first-time left-footed volley to beat both Henderson and Halford, who got the last touch, at the near post to make it 2-0.

Kitson did badly scuff an effort wide in stoppage time but the Hornets were largely decent value for their two-goal advantage at the break.

New Portsmouth boss Michael Appleton made a change at the interval, bringing on Benjani for Tal Ben-Haim, with Joel Ward switching to left-back, but it was the home side who were straight out of the blocks as Iwelumo and Sordell combined well before the latter struck an ambitious curler wide.

Next, Buaben had a shot from the edge of the area deflected area after a lovely incisive clipped pass from Kightly had given Iwelumo the chance to bring others into play.

Yeates had a piledriver blocked on the edge of the area and then Sordell fired over the top from the right side of the area.

Portsmouth did have a rare opportunity to half the deficit in the 63rd minute when they were awarded a free-kick centrally and around 25 yards out, but Halford’s set piece comfortably cleared the bar.

The next free-kick was awarded to Watford and although this was further out, Yeates’ whipped-in effort with his right foot may well have only needed a touch to take it past the keeper but it bounced through to Henderson.

But Watford really should have scored a third with 20 minutes remaining when a Yeates corner from the right was half-cleared to Hodson, who delivered the ball back into the box and Sordell had a free header, but put it over.

Jonathan Hogg picked up a yellow card in the 75th minute for a robust challenge on substitute Abdul Razak but then Loach was forced into his first real save of the match to save an on-target header from a corner.

Kightly deservedly received a warm round of applause when he was replaced by Deeney with six minutes left but Pompey had another opportunity when a free-kick into the box was headed back across goal by Ricardo Rocha but Kitson headed down and wide of the near post.

Loach ensured he would keep a clean sheet by diving to his right and making a fine save to keep out a Halford free-kick in the first minute of stoppage time but Watford finished strongly, with Deeney having a shot blocked and Yeates curling an improvised effort wide.

The Hornets also had a strong penalty appeal turned down when a Yeates free-kick appeared to be blocked by a Pompey arm in the defensive wall but they finished the contest as worthy victors to move further away from danger at the wrong end of the table after a fourth home win in five.

Yes, professional performance. 1 win off a top half position. Marriappa, Hogg, Big Chris The Prince, Super Marv, in fact, all had a good game. Well done Dychey your team is now getting some of the luck that was misiing from the first few games. The palace game is now forgiven. Keep it up.

Very good and well done everyone concerned. Hogg was simply outstanding as was the defence. Heresy I know but they're better without Eustace and Doyley. Hodson equals double the value for Lloydinho so must be first choice. The midfield is flexible and mobile and Buaben adds to the attacking play. Even Iwelumo puts in a good shift now-he wins everything and distracts the opposing defenders. He's not pleasing on the eye but does an effective job. Crack on SD you're developing a good side and I reckon you'll become an asset if they continue along these lines.

The last time I saw a watford player cover as much ground as Hogg today we were in the old second division.
We closed the opposition down better than at any other game this season. Kightly and Bauben ran their socks off and Marriappa seems to get better with every game. Very enjoyable afternoon although Portsmouth were one of the poorer side to come to Watford so far.

Hogg was immense as I have said from the start, but he is passing the ball around with Bauben and not watching the ball fly over his head like he does when with Eustace. Big Chris was excellent, hope his doubters can give him the credit he deserves after today. Hodson offers so much more than Doyley, keeps the ball in the ground, can cross and won many a header against bigger oppo. Centre half pairing was solid. Keep going SD, was always confident in you.

I thought Maps read the game well today and Nosworthy got through some good work, I'd like to know if his loan could be extended too....lets try and forget about the dodgy pass across the back line though! Good efficient win.
Hogg was the main man for me.
Amazing that a few months ago most of us thought Eustace and Taylor were the irreplaceable backbone of our team but its hard to see how they regain their places because Hogg, the Prince and Noseworthy ( in spite of two over casual errors today) have been exceptional.
Mariappa was excellent again and he and Nyron look to be a great pairing.
So good to see another clean sheet and currently if we score we actually look capable of holding on to the lead which is a big change.
Well done.

Our biggest problem for a number of seasons has been our defence but since Nosworthy has joined us Loach looks more confident, Marriappa is putting in much better positional performances rather than just good individualc challenges. Hogg & Bauben are getting more time on the ball which is releasing our forwards. Kightly is what we have been missing on the wing - someone to take players on (and beat them) and get the ball in behind the oppositions defence. Yeates is frustrating though, he can't seem to tackle anyone either going forward or in defence - very one paced - only redeaming quality is his dead ball crosses but don't think that is enough to warrant a place. Iwelumo despite being frustrating with the ball at his feet he definitely is causing problems with his head and giving something for Sordell to fedd off of. I like Eustace but I think at the moment re-introducing him might be a step backwards. What we need is another quick winger and I tyhink a lot more goals could come. But on the whole onwards and upwards.

I agree it was a great shame that so many of our fans left and didn't stay to applaud the players off after such a solid display. Mariappa has blossomed since Nosworthy arrived, and what about that tackle by Nosworthy...Awesome!
! Hogg has been my player of the season so far. Eustace has been my favourite player for the past 2 seasons but I can't see how he can get back into the side at the moment as The Prince and Hogg work so well together as do The Prince and Sordell. Well done Shaun Dyche it would have been so easy to bring Eustace straight back in now he's fit but it was the right decision to leave things as they were and we got the result we deserved. Onwards and upwards, well done to the whole team, not a bad performance by anyone.

Solid performance, but let's not get carried away. They did open us up a few times, but like the Watford of old, couldn't find the finishing touch.

That said, we too made many more chances than we converted, although the Sordell free header with 20 mins to go was flagged offside.

One of these days the ball will run for us in the box and it will be another Millwall: Donny away? Don't bet against it!

Why is it that every time we win, it is against "one of the poorer sides" to come to the Vic??

Are Millwall, Peterboro, Brighton, Pompey and Reading all "the poorest" teams in the division?

You are only as good we allow them to be, and in most games this season we have bben the equal, or even better than most teams we have played!

I haven't 'changed my tune'. I still want dyche out as I don't rate him and I don't think , long term, he'll achieve anything for this club. As I say this is a very inconsistent league and we could easily lose the next 3 or 4 games. Dyche has got very lucky recently with injuries forcing him to make changes, attacking changes, and Brighton and Pompey are losing to everyone at the moment. Donny, Bristol city, ipswich, Leeds and blackpool next. If we get 9 or more points from them then its likely I'll have to put up and shut up for this season.

Well I predicted 3-0 to us and it should have been with that clear chance for Sordell, but a wins a win and great to see the team gel like that, even with the new boys. It was also good to see Bassini on the side of the pitch not sure where the reference most turned their back on him as I sure as hell didn't see that far from it. Well done lutondown for admitting you are chief moaner and actually posting a positive response to the win as did your mates SA hornet and Buckler. Shame on the usual t its moaning about Bas, how about actually giving the guy a chance for a change he has not done anything wrong, even having a go at GT is his right, or am I talking to planks (thick as)?I hope if we lose the usual suspects don't get too fickle but reckon the way we are setting out may mean we are going to have a good run now! SD has a great problem with choosing his first team which is not something we could have said a few months ago and will be even better once our injured players are back in contention. COYH!!!!

'No Wheels' - good point about the Pompey fans - made a noise all the way through despite their uninterested and poor team!
I respect their support that actually added to the game.
My Christmas wish if for my fellow WFC fans to add this kind of support whether we are are winning or losing....

GT will always be first on my list, because he is a pathetic chairman, with no substance or input, and who rarely visitis the Vic these days!!

But you run him a very close second!!

Priceless!! Would not give a penny for your thoughts, if that is what you mean?????

Where is Alex Hillcroft after stating last week, "I have had enough of Bas....I am cheering for a resounding Pompey victory"!!!

Where is Col Gaddaffi also? I predicted back to back home wins, he predicted defeats, and now he has done a runner!!

We can do without "fans" such as these two saddo's, plus a few more from the serial moaners of the angry mob!!

Well done Bas.
Well done SD.
Happy Xmas to you both!

I see you can't have a go at me for changing my tune, so have to resort to childish insults.

Is this because I am pro-bas, pro-Dyche, pro-GT, pro-everything, just anti grahamfransen?

Have you ever thought of just commenting on the game and then finishing there, without having to have a go at people who have said well done to the team?

You started it mate!

You only get retaliation, if you want to start an argument!

I am pleased you are pro-Bas, pro-Dyche, and "pro-everything", but I most definitely disagree with being pro-GT.

A fabulous manager, a total legend at WFC, and one that we will never forget!!

As a Chairman, however, he is totally out of his depth, and it is time he handed his role over to a hands on executive (someone like JR did when he was in charge).

We need hands-on people who are passionate about our club, who live within reasonable travelling distance, who attend games, who liaise regularly with Bas and SD.

And someone who makes an input and a good impression with all facets of the club (including local BBC radio). I fear that none of this applies to dear old GT.

Well Done lads - Good result against an average pompey side. Hogg gets better with every game, Kightly showing his premiership quality. Solid across the park and as SD mentions we did 'manage' the 2nd half very well.

Lets keep our feet on the ground though people. Much sterner tests to come and we are still only 3 points off the drop zone. Agree with the above posts on our support. I sat in the rous near the vicarage road stand and our lack of noise was very apparent.

Onwards and upwards...

You know Mr Frantic, you don't know how to let it be.
I disagree in the main with Loofer, Cleef, Cornybillious but I do respect their views despite the banter
You however are off the radar, you even pick fights with people who agree with you, that is mad!
I suspect this is your only form of release and if I has a heart I might pity you, but I don't so I don't.
GT in mind is beyond reproach, and you sir have told lies on your attempt to besmirch him, an attempt that is only endorsed by the minority on this board, clapper or not.
There are signs things are improving, but no I'm not convinced. One things for sure if the improvement continues I will be very happy to say I was Wrong.

Keen to join the angry mob are you?
