Watford surrender 88th minute lead to lose 3-2 at Blackpool

Watford led 2-1 with two minutes of normal time to go but lost 3-2 at Blackpool to extend their winless run to seven matches.

Charlie Adam gave the home side the lead on 17 minutes but Henri Lansbury soon equalised after some good work from Heidar Helguson.

Scott Loach kept his side in the match with a number of inspired saves and seemed to have helped his side secure their first win since December 7 when Tom Cleverley finished off a fine move with just over ten minutes to go.

However, Blackpool grabbed a controversial equaliser on 89 minutes as Keith Southern initially seemed to be offside before scoring at the second attempt.

And in the first minute of injury time, Brett Omerod grabbed the winner to land Pool their first win in five.

The Hornets made one change to the starting line-up as Danny Graham, who has scored once in 17 matches, made way for Ross Jenkins, with Cleverley initially joining Helguson up top.

Loach was Watford's stand-out player in last week's 2-1 defeat at Doncaster Rovers and the England Under-21 international needed to make two superb saves from headers in the opening ten minutes.

First he denied Adam by clawing away an effort which was set to dip into the top corner and then he tipped over a Keith Southern header.

Heidar Helguson dragged a volley wide around the quarter hour mark and Brett Omerod fired over from distance but it wasn't long before the opener arrived.

Loach saved Southern's initial effort but he was unable to gather Neal Eardley's cross under pressure from Adam and the former Rangers midfielder bundled the ball home from close range.

However, the visitors equalised ten minutes later when Helguson dribbled his way into the six yard box on the left byline and cut the ball back to Lansbury, to leave the on loan Arsenal midfielder to coolly slot past Paul Ruchubka.

Southern had a couple of efforts from distance go wide and Tom Cleverley's shot was blocked but the score remained level going into the break.

Loach was called into action again early in the second half. The 21-year-old will know he should have held on to Eardley's shot from 20 yards but he recovered well to get back on his feet and save Omerod's rebound.

Helguson had a half chance go wide but it was Pool who should have taken the lead on 54 minutes. The home side broke three-on-two from a Watford corner and Barry Bannan picked out the unmarked Adam in the middle, but his touch was really poor and allowed the defenders to recover and block his shot.

Lansbury was having more of an impact than in recent weeks and had two chances in quick succession to net his second of the game.

A Jenkins dummy allowed Lansbury the space to shoot from ten yards out and he was also put through one-on-one but on both occasions Rachubka was equal to the on loan Arsenal youngster.

Vaughan was causing problems for Watford breaking from deep and shortly after sending a dangerous ball across the goalmouth, Loach had to save the midfielder's shot with his feet.

Loach then made a super stop to deny Adam from 30 yards and seem to have helped his side secure the three points when Cleverley and Lansbury combined well and the on loan Manchester United midfielder netted his tenth goal of the season on 79 minutes.

But with two minutes left of normal time, Watford failed to clear their lines properly and a Ishmel Demontagnac shot fell straight to Southern and although Loach did well to save his initial effort, he couldn't do anything about him converting the rebound.

And less than two minutes later, Omerod bundled home a Nardiello cross to extend Watford's winless run to seven matches.

Blackpool: Eardley, Evatt (Nardiello 88), Baptiste, Crainey; Southern, Adams, Vaughan; Taylor-Fletcher (Burgess 75), Omerod, Bannan (Demontagnac 75). Subs: Gilks, Butler, Edwards, Bangura.

Watford: Loach; Hodson (Bennett 70), Mariappa, DeMerit, Doyley; Cowie (Harley 52), Lansbury (Graham 80), Eustace, Cleverley; Cowie; Helguson. Subs: Lee, Bryan, McGinn, Hoskins.

Referee: Carl Boyeson

Attendance: 6,855 (346)

Going down unless that dopey Scot is relieved of his duties.

Pathetic. We need a friggin defender, like i've been saying all week, not another kid in midfield. This is a dereliction of duty.

Sorry psycho but I can't see many positives to take out of that game.Yet again,as like last week,we got battered!!Loach pulling off save after save is probably a positive as a couple of million pound coming our way in the next week or so when he's sold.
Doyleys been poor since scoring against QPR,Hodson has also gone off the radar,Mariappa is not a centre half & DeMerit wants to leave in the summer.Cleverley & Lansbury have both been off form as of late(but hey they are not WFC players).Eustace,Har
ley,Jenkins & Cowie are having more bad games than good as of late.Graham couldn't hit a cows a**e,and although I love the bloke Helguson is not the answer anymore.
All in all I think we're heading for League 1(but i do hope i'm wrong).

Malky has no tactical nous, managers like Hollowat do, hence why we keep getting so overrun. We are poor, and the manager poorer. I hope those of you that welcomed the decision to appoint this buffoon are eating humble pie now.

We need a change and quickly. otherwise we'll be relegated by Easter.

The only positives i can possibly comment on are that without SL in the nets we would have been 2-0 down within the first 8 minutes. SL has stopped this result from being embarrassing. Blackpool managed 16 shots on target and 9 off target.

Mind you at least we scored twice against the run of play. It looks like we played 5-4-1 with HH as the lone striker for long periods of this game with TC tucking in behind him . I can't understand why DG or WH can't be given more time on the pitch to regain some confidence and get us out of this winless run.

I'm not throwing the towel in, i'm just starting to get that uncomfortable feeling that with such a young team have we got what it takes to stop the rot for the second half of this season.

Derek Payne says...
5:35pm Sat 23 Jan 10

Relegated by Easter? That'd be a mathematical impossibility, even we'd struggle to achieve.

Unless you mean Jermaine Easter, getting the goal which puts us down.
But he's playing in League One with MK Dons now isn't he?

All this talk of being relegated is very premature. The bottom 3 teams are 9 points below us. Despite a run of poor results we are still mid table and within touching distance of the play offs.

Very Disappointing AGAIN !

The amount of goals we shift especially away from home is almost worst in the country.

We have two defenders on management team so beggars belief, one would of thought we would be tight as r soles at the back.

Loach kept score down, we just are in a rut and with two homes games to come, if we cannott achieve at least on win (3 points) from the next ttwo games, I think the time will come to review Malky's position (albeit I doubt we can afford to pay him off so stuck).

Poor Form on Pitch
Poor Form off the Pitch (elton concert money now used up, shirt sponsorship money withheld, rights issue being held up by technicalities, Pompey unable to settle up for smith and williamson)

Admin and Relegation (either/or/both) STILL A POSSIBILITY

No Governance on poor team performances, as Winter and board will not rock boat to keep drawing their salaries !

Fancy a Salad anyone ?

At the start of this season i looked at our young squad and the clubs financial situation and i said i would be happy if MM keeps us up come May.

I never expected us to be mid table with albeit now 7 points from the playoffs at this point of the season. I do have my worries that if we don't hit some form soon, the later part of the season will be more difficult than we would prefer it to be.

We don't have money to bolster the squad and we certainly don't have the money to replace MM. But give him some credit with what he has done so far. I expect confidence is low at the moment with such a bad run of form and this result will not have helped. I do believe MM can turn it around and keep us up.

Championship football is all i expected for next season and this result today hurts just as much as the rest have. Bring on the Swans.

Last time we lost a late lead to Blackpool there was a change of manager. The board - and GT in particular - have to face up to the fact that they made a dreadful mistake by appointing a manager with no experience on a three year contract; at the very least, as i've said many times before, they should have appointed an experienced number two.

Mackay's lack of tactical nous and experience has been plain to see, and he is clearly not the kind of character that can inspire the dressing room, raise morale and instill belief.

The signing of McGinn, moreover, seems to smack of someone who, because of his own insecurities, is reluctant to sign an experienced pro would who provide an extra voice in the dressing room.

We play Swansea, Sheff Utd and Barnsley next. I cannot see us getting anything out of those games.

The manager must, MUST!!!! look to bring in two experienced defenders on loan by next week, not more kids like Cathcart, but defenders with experience of this division.

Personally i think its time for the board to realise their mistake and rectify it promptly. There must be some good, experienced managers in leagues one and two who could do a job here. We do not owe Malky a living and the club is bigger than any one individual.

Followed the match on 3 Counties and clearly Loach kept us in the match.Blackpool were on top as would be expected so the priority would be to marshall the defence to get something out of the match. So what is the logic of bringing an out of form striker onto the pitch when you've just gone 2- 1 up with 10 minutes to go? The players in our squad are mostly Championship standard - some like Mariappa and De Merit have played the Premiership season. So why are we playing so badly at the moment shipping in goals by the bagfull? Inexperienced managers can create a surge but rarely know how to respond when things go wrong. So where is the next win coming from?
The Boardroom and Financial crisis must have had a damaging effect on the dressing room. GT is in charge but showing no evidence of leadership at the moment. Maybe that's because he backed Lord Ashcroft rather than the Russos and now realises that the Lord of Belize is only interested in protecting his investment not putting anymore money into the Club.
It's going to be a struggle to the end of the season.

The reasons we lost 3-2 after leading 2-1 with just two minutes to go are threefold. First, wrong tactics. Secondly, an inexperiened team. Thirdly, no leadership on or off the field. We cannot afford to get rid of MM but we MUST replace his assistant, Sean Dyche, with someone older, wiser and much more tactically experienced. We need to play Harley and Hoskins more often just to bring some experience to the team. We need to beg, borrow or steal a central defender to play with Demerit or Mariappa ( I don't care -the two are equally below average) and make him Captain. Therefore this player needs to be experienced. The re-occuring word in this posting is "experience". We totally lack it and I am now beginning to get worried.

After the defeat at Posh MM said he wasn't worried, well after this one he d**n well should be. Any team leading with 2 minutes to go should see the game out. I agree with others that MM needs to get someone with more savvy than SD by his side.

How he believes another midfielder is needed when we've been crying out for a replacement for MW just beggars belief. WE NEED A DECENT CENTRE HALF NOW!!!

We've got a club in freefall at the moment. The biggest mistake our club's made is siding with Ashcroft, nobody in the club knows what the hell is going on. I'll have the salad please.

I would've taken a point but to lose again so late on with 2 goals suggests a lack in concentration and organisation to see out a game.

Didn't hear much about the game but seen quotes from Mackay which suggests Loach had a blinder anyway as he does away from home.

No goals for the forwards again from open play..

We after all, are a very average side, with no money, and this job for any manager is a nightmare. WHY OH WHY is ashcroft on the board if he doesnt out any decent money in, when he is a billionaire!!! He could own, quite easily, a much bigger club with his money! He could save us if he puts in 10-15mill between him n elton. They say 'we cant expect them to put ne money in', i do when were nearing administration. If they love the club then 15-20m between tthem is a drop in the ocean, but would make a huge difference. I just dont understand them.

Football in general is in a state of chaos. Even ManUtd in the mire. Pompey soon in admin etc etc....

Why !?????

Financial mismanagement, players on silly wages, costs out of control, people buying clubs with loans then loading debt against the clubs, rather than themselves ..z

so what is needed is change !?!????

So WATFORD had changed approach, in the brothers, who took a very different approach, very financially shrewd, challenged peoples comfort zones, negotiated deals like dogs,
put a get well plan in place, wasn't popular with everyone, they even challenged the managers tactics when things not good, just like all fans would love to do, but maybe when you've stuck millions in, your entitled to ask all your employees challenging questions, even the manager etc etc

so we had a different approach, it was working, on and off the pitch, we were competing and winning !

So now we've gone back to the other system, now we are just about participating !!! Not competitve or winning anymore .....

When are we at Watford or Football ever going to LEARN !!

MADNESS !!!!

I wish we'd gone into Admin, had those 10 points deducted, had the brothers in charge, debt written off, winter & co off the board, and a competitive team on and off the pitch, we wouldve recovered those 10 points by now !!! In fact, due to the situation, I feel like we've lost 10 points by low morale anyway, but kept all the debt and wrong ppl at helm !!!!!

I hope Jimmy & Vince keep their cash free (rumours that might now buy Barnet or Wycombe), cos we may well need them by Easter !!!!!

If you ever sat near those guys, or travelled with them on train to away game, you would know how passionate they were about the team, players and club ..... Try have the same conversation with Winter, Timperley & co .... No chance, in fact doubt you'd see them on the train . Also heard Winter recently showed interest in Sheff Weds CEO job !!! Like his predecessor Ashton, always one eye on next career move (ManU my arse, but he did apply for Charlton post, but didn't get it).

And where is Elton ? IF he really loved the club, why not buy it lock/stock for £8M .... I am sure that if us fans and all those that post had his money, we would think nothing of buying the club !! So why not him .... Look at ALL the contacts he has both in pop stars and business ppl, if he loved the club that much I'm sure without too much effort he could raise funds or get a consortium pretty quickly.

Consortium of Watford loving / living/ brought up in pop stars and celebs £1 to £2m each;

Elton (Pinner / Watford fan)
Vinnie Jones (Bedmond/ Watford Fan)
George Michael (Bushey/ ??)
Geri Halliwell (Watford/ Watford Fan)
Bradley Walsh (Watford boy/arsenal fan)

Brian

Wait till after the election and the Tories get in, see how quickly Ashcroft tries to offload !!!

We do need some help in defence. We really need a Malky type in there asap.
Of course the results have been poor of late but now isn't the time to moan and groan. The players have done much better than most of us thought so we should continue to support them though this difficult period.Malky and co have their work cut out but like most of our squad he is inexperienced and needs us to believe in him.
There are certainly 3 worse teams than us in this league so we should be ok.However we need a confidence boost soon.

As yet I have not been certified insane but there is time.

I expect us to float around the fringes of the play off and relagtion places without getting involved in either. Mid-table obscurity really.

It is not MM's fault that the team is inexperienced, because he has not been given the opportunity to bring in a quality and experienced defender. It is also worrying that we are relying so much on our loanees, which MM has done very well to bring in. We are desperate for a defender, and DG needs a burst of confidence - as we don't want him to have a second half of the season like he had last year at Carlisle.

The team need to be resilient and when we go ahead we still need to play further up the field - it is more difficult for teams to score against us in their half. Inexperience is not an excuse, even though it is a fact. Strength of character is what is needed, and if we can get a bit of quality in that would be good.

hurt-easy is is my security word and it sums up our back four at the moment.

-
Seems odd that Harley isn't playing to add some experience. Play Doyley right back and drop Hodson to increase experience in defence
-
We definitely need a commanding centre back on loan (assume no money to buy?)
-
Our bad form has coincided with Russos leaving
-
Our bad form has coincided with Jay DeMerit returning from injury
-
Coincidence? I don't think so

Still closer to play offs than relegation people, the next 7 games in 22 days are important, so we all need to be up for it!

The reason the Russo's forced the isssue is because Ashcroft wouldn't meet with them to discuss the financial position at the club. By forcing the issue, Ashcroft stumped up the money, but now has done nothing to help the club. The rights issue is for the money Ashcroft paid the Russo's and what he thinks he'll need to put into the club until the end of the season. There will be no money in the off season for transfers, let alone now after the 125k they spent on McGinn-who is forward planning for when half our starting midfield goes back to Arsenal and Man U at the end of the season. Also, in a piece in the WO, Ashcroft stipulated a condition of the loan is that until it is paid back via the rights issue, the money raised from Eltons concert for players will go to Fordwat. I'm not a financial expert, but how long does it take to get a rights issue up and running with a date for when it is going to happen?
Anyone still think Ashcroft has saved the club?
As with earlier posts, the club was headed in the right direction before the Russo's left, what a shambles since. How many fans would be interested in buying shares? Maybe then form a fans coalition for a bigger say in the club.

regarding Williamson and the "hiccup" with Newcastle, apparently Portsmouth would have to pay to Newcastle the difference between what they paid and what Newcastle are prepared to offer i.e. 3M less 1M. This Newcastle are not prepared to do,so the deal is off. The only option is for Watford to take back MW for what we sold him for and that is a no option.

I cant say I am surprised by the result and neither can I say I am in despair. However make no mistake conceding two goals and three points in a couple of minutes is damaging to team morale and is far worse than losing 1.0.

Ignoring opinions and looking at fact we have not done well since Cathcarts injury and Jays return.

In all honesty I dont think it is Jays fault but I do feel that several players starting with Danny Graham back in october have gone off the boil. Tom and henri are getting back to what they are and with a decent centre half either Adrian or Jay would look so much better. Together they are one bad pairing. For me I would like to sell Jay now and what we get use on a loanee if needs must. if we dont do this and lose Loach we have a major problem. The other change would to make Eustace captain he is the leader on the field and should be recognised as such.

I do feel that JD is not a great defender, and loses his position too easily. He would do better to concentrate on his game rather than leading the team. He needs somebody strong beside him to cover for him and keep him on track - to be honest I hope he starts in the world cup for USA v England!!

As regards getting a defender in, if Williamson is not available who should we go for? How about Stuart Parnaby or Martin Taylor - both are experienced and neither are regular starters at the moment? They would also be good leaders and would keep Jay DeMerit in position.

Yes, Ashcroft could easily put some more money into the club, as could Elton John. The Russos just aren't in the same class financially. They gave all they could, it wasn't enough and then came their threats.
What is Ashcroft up to? Well apart from his ownership of 37% of Watford's shares and his day job of making £millions in Central America and elsewhere - he is Treasurer of the Conservative Party. He has been pouring £millions into marginal seats to support Tory Candidates but so far has put nothing into Watford FC.
All he has done is to say he will underwrite a new share issue. He may buy some, none or all of them He may achieve a majority shareholding or may pull out. Until then he wants to keep his options open and avoid a national scandal in the run up to the General Election in May. Do not be surprised if the share issue is delayed until May and he keeps his wallet firmly shut when it comes to buying players..

Bring back Keith Burkinshaw in an advisory role. If Mackay doesn't like it then tell him where to get.

Very annoying indeed, I could not believe it when the missus (who is from Blackpool!) told me the result, when I left the room we were 2 - 1 up, and when I cam back we were 3 - 2 down !! blimey I had't even finished the sports section of the paper!. Seriously though, as much as I can understand some of the comments about get rid of the manager, he has no nous, I'd agree if this were Posh and Ferguson, they never got started and despite 2 promotions they got rid and they are still struggling. - My question is this no hope manager and bunch of inexperienced 'children' got us to 5th in the league. So he had the skills and they had the ability, what has changed (most obviously the board) but does anyone really think the r's were whispering pearls of tactical wisdom into MM's ear? something else has changed here that has not come out on the board's yet. I had thought blackpool would be a tough match, but it is galling to lose it so badly at the death, We need another televised game, we've actually played best on tv this season bizarrely.

if we arent getting a new defender, how about playing mariappa and bennett in the middle. I seem to remember we kept a couple of clean sheets with this combo earlier in the season before cathcart arrived.

I hate reminding worthing_hornet that Rodgers was manager when we were 5th in the League - not Mackay.
Don't want that turncoat back and what a dreadful job he did at Reading.

Sorry - my last posting was, of course, rubbish. It was under Boothroyd we came 5th after leading the league table almost up to Easter. But I wouldn't want him back either. He must have the worst record for buying useless and expensive players second only to Vialli. We do pick 'em, don't we?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, but the manager would be sacked after every few weeks if some of you got their way (look how that approach has helped QPR). What the club needs is stability, one or two new players on the pitch (somehow), cool heads and a win asap. Frankly staying in the Championship would be a major achievement within the current constraints. We're closer to the top 6 than the bottom 3 as I write. That's not bad from where I sit when you think how it could have been at the start of the season. Agree we're on a bad run and that the defence (and striker options) need sorting pronto, but surely sacking the manager (or his team) is not the answer. I'm glad we have a club to support after all the trauma before Christmas. Is it any wonder we're on a bad run when the board put everyone through all that nonsense? How stabilising all that was. Come on U Horns.

But the team BR built at Reading has turned over two premier teams on their cup run,so he must know talent when he sees it .i.e. MW

At last - I knew you had it in you (the first sentence anyway) a bit of common sense and a very tiny bit of understanding as to what might help the club. Spoilt it though with your normal stock in trade finale.
There is no coincidence that we were heading for promotion under Aidy up until for whatever reason Keith Burkinshaw left the club. After he left we plummeted like a stone. With KB in the wings Aidy was getting all the glory but whiley old KB was pulling all the strings and pressing all the right buttons.
My thoughts at the time was that AB was getting too big for his boots and down to earth KB couldn't be asked to deal with that at his age so used an excuse and slipped away quietly rather than embarrass the club with saying what the real reason for his departure was. Everyone likes to be complimented now and again but unfortunately AB was lapping up every last bit of the cream.
He would be a real asset again but I think we have now gone too far down the road to be able to pursuade him to come back for another cameo appearance.
