Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew has reminded Jason Puncheon of his responsibilities as a footballer in the light of tabloid stories about a bust-up last weekend.

The 28-year-old Croydon-born winger was reportedly involved in a confrontation outside the World Darts final at Alexandra Palace on Sunday.

Witnesses claimed team-mate Barry Bannan had to restrain Puncheon after he was taunted by darts fans as they left the venue.

The Sun newspaper reported that Puncheon threatened to “kill you all” before being bundled into a waiting car.

The position of footballers as role models is in the spotlight after convicted rapist Ched Evans failed again to tie down a deal – this time at Oldham Athletic – after being released from prison in October last year.

Pardew said: “Footballers are role models, absolutely.

“I have reminded Jason that he has a responsibility to carry that forward as a Crystal Palace player.

“His behaviour was inappropriate, and I have told him that and he knows that, it is my job to make sure we have the right role models.”
