Neil Warnock has revealed Ipswich Town saw off competition from a handful of clubs to land Jonathan Williams for a second loan spell from Crystal Palace.

The 20-year-old linked up with the Tractor Boys for three months after enjoying a successful loan spell at Portman Road last season.

But Ipswich weren’t the only team after him this time, with Eagles boss Warnock pointing out it was their willingness to play him in his favoured position which won the deal.

“There were four or five clubs after him,” the Selhurst manager explained.

“It is just that I know Mick McCarthy is going to play him in the hole where I want him to play. He enjoyed it last year as well so I just thought it was good.

“He is only going to miss probably a couple of games for us before we can have him back with a 28-day recall.

“He wasn’t getting on the bench because we’ve been doing well in that area so I think it is better for a young lad to go and get games and then we will be able to bring him back when he is match fit, although he got an injury the other night.”
