First goal in Hammers game key for Eagles midfielder
JONNY Williams believes a bright start against West Ham tomorrow night could see Crystal Palace earn a vital three points in their quest to beat the drop.
The Eagles took 45 minutes to get going in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Norwich, with Gary Hooper's first half goal condemning Tony Pulis’ men to their tenth defeat of the season.
To their credit, Palace rallied after the break but just couldn’t break down a stubborn Norwich defence.
And substitute Williams, back from a three month spell on the sidelines, admitted grabbing the first goal in Tuesday’s London derby with the Hammers could be vital.
He said: “We have got the ability to go and win these games.
“We have got West Ham on Tuesday and Cardiff coming up as well on the Saturday.
“They are the kinds of games where we are really going to go and attack teams looking for that first goal, because I think that is important.
“We were playing catch-up today and in the end it was just margins. We had the one that hit the bar but that is just football.”
Williams returned to the action as a second half sub after recovering from an ankle injury that has kept him out of action for the past three months.
The Welshman replaced the impressive Barry Bannan in the 73rd minute as Crystal Palace pushed for a second half equaliser.
And the fans' favourite admitted he is looking forward to Tuesday’s West Ham game at Selhurst Park, where he expects the atmosphere to be at its very best.
Williams said: “It’s a London derby, so the fans are going to be well up for it.
“It’s a big game for us seeing as though we unfortunately didn’t get any points this weekend.
“I haven’t played at Selhurst Park since the game against Sunderland in August where it was rocking and I'm sure it will be rocking on Tuesday.
“It’s a game we are going to have to go and win, so we will be going out there looking for three points and the fans will be backing us all the way I am sure.”
