Powell: League One monthly honours recognise Charlton's team ethic

CHRIS Powell believes Charlton’s double success in the January League One awards is down to the team and not individuals.

Powell became manager of the month for the second time this season after leaders Charlton took 13 points from 15 in January, six of that tally coming from back-to-back 1-0 wins over promotion rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United.

Skipper Johnnie Jackson sunk the Steel City duo with a pair of identical and stunning free-kicks, an achievement recognised with the player of the month honour.

But Powell was keen to spread the glory and pointed out the only prize which really matters this season is automatic promotion.

He said: “It is team of the month, that’s how I see it. It is not me, it is the boys that go out there and perform for our football club and they have been brilliant.

“I am of course honoured to get it for the second time, but I would prefer to get the one at the end of the year!

“I think that shows what we would have done as a team and as a football club but of course I’m not going to turn the January award down, it is something I’m very proud of in my first full year.”

On Jackson’s award, Powell added: “Firing on from Michael Morrison getting it in November it is very good and I’m proud for John our skipper.

“I’ve always said sometimes games will be decided by moments of brilliance and class.

“John did it not once but twice in a week against two rivals.

“We got six points from it and that just shows what he has brought to us this season and what he has brought to this football club since he has been here shouldn’t be underestimated.

“It is a great honour for him but I’m sure he will say he has got a great rapport with Rhoys Wiggins down the left and will, as the man he is, speak about the other 10 players who are out there.

“I’m sure the boys will be ribbing him about it but I’m hoping he will have something else to be honoured with at the end of the year.”
