CHARLTON were denied a famous win at Anfield by a last-gasp penalty in their final game of the season.
Goalkeeper Darren Randolph, making his debut, guessed right to tip Harry Kewell's 90th-minute penalty on to the post, only for the ball to spin back over the line.
Matt Holland scored after two minutes to give Charlton a surprise lead, but Xabi Alonso drew the Reds level on 62 minutes.
Darren Bent volleyed Alan Pardew's men back in front nine minutes later.
Randolph, playing as on-loan Scott Carson was prevented from playing for his parent club, foiled Dirk Kuyt, Kewell and Alonso with top-class saves.
The 20-year-old made an excellent diving stop to deny Alonso a minute from time.
But from the corner, Bougherra was judged to have handled by referee Dermott Gallagher, taking charge of his final Premiership game.
As Charlton prepare for life in the Championship, one member of the squad has already gone, as striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has been released.
CHARLTON: Randolph; Young, Thatcher, Bougherra, Hreidarsson; Sam (Hasselbaink 82), Holland, Song, Zheng (M Bent 90), Ambrose (Hughes 51); D Bent.
