Surrey cricket manager Chris Adams hopes he is given the time to make sure his young guns realise their potential.

The Kia Oval chief confirmed the signing of Glamorgan Tom Maynard on Thursday after the youngster penned a three-year deal with the club.

The 21-year-old joins the likes of skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown, Jason Roy, Tom Lancefield, Arun Harinath, Gary Wilson, Matthew Spriegel, Steven Davies, Rory Burns and Zafar Ansari in a youthful looking batting department for next season.

Adams has systematically promoted young talent from within during his tenure in charge and will underpinned that with experience in the form of seasoned pros Michael Brown, Mark Ramprakash and Zander de Bruyn.

The former Sussex captain and coach saw the green shoots of recovery last summer with four County Championship Division Two wins.

And he hopes he is given the time to build on that success this year.

“I’ve never been one to say we’ve got to win this trophy or that trophy,” he said.

“We’d love to get promoted but to do that you’ve got win a lot of games of cricket.

“The side is a very, very exciting one and it depends on how long that young talents gels together as to how successful we will be.

“That doesn’t happen overnight. it could take a few years to start performing together, but we need to show we are progressing.

“We are committed to developing our own players and bringing them through the system for the long term success of Surrey.”

Maynard played 93 first team games for the Dragons, hitting two one day centuries and number of match winning innings before making the move to London.

He was attracted by the Lions mix of youth and experience, and Adams - mindful of the runs Maynard scored against his men last summer - was delighted to get his man.

“He has been attracted here by a number of factors, but most of all he had a sense of wanting to be at Surrey through what will be a very exciting time here," he added.

“We were painfully on the receiving end of what he is capable of last season and although this was not a signing we had planned for, it was an opportunity that was too good not to take.

“I am delighted that Tom is adding further depth to what is looking like a very strong squad.”
