England’s Twenty20 World Cup winning wicket-keeper batsman Craig Kieswetter may have set the world alight in the Carribean on Sunday.

But Surrey captain Rory Hamilton-Brown reckons his spot will be under pressure when he returns to these shores.

Kieswetter smashed 63 to help his side to a seven-wicket victory over Australia and claim the man of the match award in Barbados as skipper Paul Collingwood’s men secured the first World Cup of the year.

The South African-born star’s efforts will put pressure on current Test gloveman Matt Prior for selection this summer, but Hamilton-Brown thinks Surrey’s Steven Davies is not far away from a recall himself.

The 23-year-old, signed from Worcestershire in the summer, has started the campaign like a train averaging 72 with the bat in the Championship having hit four 50s and a century in eight innings.

Davies, who hit a matchwinning 81 in a one-day win over his former employers earlier this month, already has a Twenty20 international cap to his name and his county captain is convinced he is not far from forcing his way back into contention.

“Watching Steve bat at the moment is a lot like watching Brian Lara. He has all the shots and isn’t afraid of using them,” he said.

“He is our stand out performer with the bat this season and I would hope England are watching him very closely.

“I think he has the ability to step up and he has proved that for us this season already.”

Surrey, with a young and developing side, have started the four day season slowly and are still waiting for their first victory having slumped to a three day defeat to Gloucestershire last time out.

Putting runs on the board has been the main problem with the usually-prolific Mark Ramprakash and Usman Afzaal struggling for form in the opening weeks of the campaign.

But Wandsworth’s Hamilton-Brown is convinced progress is being made.

“We’ve struggled a bit. We’ve played on result wickets and unfortunately we've come up short,” he added.

“We’re definitely making progress and I’m really excited about the way everything is going.

“Our batting order hasn’t fired, but if you look at everyone’s record they have shown they can get the runs when in form.

“We are working hard and the signs are very positive.”

Surrey - and in-form Davies - kick-off their Twenty20 campaign next month with Hamilton-Brown expecting new signing Andrew Symonds to make a big impact.

“It is a competition we are taking very seriously. We are not approaching it as a bit of fun. We think we can win it,” he said.

“Andrew is the type cricketer we have wanted for this competition for a while. He is a match winner and can quickly destroy other sides.”
