Surrey suffer league defeat

Surrey's first competitive fixture of the season ended in a disappointing 28-point defeat by Sussex in their Senior Home Counties League opener at Worthing Pavilion BC.

Surrey fielded a good mix of senior players including eight of last seasons' Middleton Cup team in their 134-108 defeat.

But only the rinks skipped by Weybridge's Mark Bishopp and Southey's Dennis Hennessy won, leaving Surrey with just four points compared to their hosts' 18.

The performance leaves team manager Dave Candeland with selection posers ahead of two further Home Counties League matches and their Middleton Cup visit to Buckinghamshire at the end of the month.

Rink 1: Sussex 13 Surrey: Phil Burge, Steve Shanley, Tim Orr, Dennis Hennessy 18. 2: Sussex 28 Anthony Parrott, Jim Burns, Gareth Morgan, Mike Sigamoney 14. 3: Sussex 20 Doug Spittles, Peter Sanders, Ron Southwood, Norman Ross 15. 4: Sussex 13 Dave Wood, Simon Fishlock, Jeff O'Leary. Surrey had maintained their excellent start to the season with their third friendly victory in a row, beating Gloucestershire 131-97 victory at West Wimbledon last weekend.

Surrey won on five out of six rinks, with president Frank Dodd suffering the only defeat.

Best performers were Steve Paice (Guildford), Geoff Taylor (Sutton), Brian Cave (Ewell) and Alan Simon (Old Coulsdon) who won 28-13.

Alan Bradshaw of Purley Bury was presented with his county badge by Dodd for reaching the semi-finals of the unbadged singles in last season's county competitions.

Surrey have another home game, this time against Essex CBA at Southey (Raynes Park) today (2pm).
