Sutton United boss Paul Doswell has revealed defender Neil Jenkins' exit is the make weight for two new arrivals at Gander Green Lane.

The former Eastbourne Borough defender left the club by mutual consent after Tuesday 2-1 win over Boreham Wood, with the 30-year-old announcing the move on Twitter after the final whistle.

Kingstonian are likely to top the list of suitors for the Ryman Premier League winner having spent a successful spell on loan at Kingsmeadow earlier this season.

Doswell is tracking a left back at League Two Wycombe Wanderers as his likely replacement, while he is also tailing a utility player to beef up his squad for the run in.

The pair are expected to sign within the next fortnight and will join on 18-month contracts as the United boss masterminds next year's switch to morning training sessions.

Jenkins, a father of four and a self-employed landscape gardener, has struggled to comeback from a succession of injuries.

And Doswell admitted he was more of a victim of circumstance than anything else.

"Looking at the bigger picture for next year, I'm speaking to a couple of targets this week that I want to bring in to the club ready for next season," he said.

"Neil has been unfortunate really because he missed pre-season with an injury, came back after his loan spell at Ks and turned his ankle and then he dislocated his shoulder.

"If you miss pre-season you are always playing catch up and because of that and the other injuries, his fitness levels are just not up there with the high standards of the others.

"He works his socks off and gives everything for the club, but he just isn't where he should be."

Goals from Craig Dundas and Harry Beautyman gave Sutton the points in a scrappy game at Gander Green Lane on Tuesday night.

Sutton had won only one of their previous seven games and Doswell, whose men host Basingstoke Town on Saturday, said it was important to get back to winning ways.

Although he admitted there was room for improvement.

"We said at the start that we didn't care how we did it, as long as we won the game," he added.

"To come back from a goal down is a tremendous effort in this league.

"I think we have conceded first in each of our last 10 or 11 games and this is as bad a stat as you can get.

"Saturday will be another tight game but if we score first I will back us to win."
