Wasps seek redemption at Irish

WASPS can kill two birds with one stone when they take on London Irish in the Anglo Welsh Cup on Sunday afternoon.

There is the chance to draw a line under last weekend’s shocker against Leeds, while at the same time avenging their only other Guinness Premiership defeat of the season – at the Madejski Stadium back in September.

Wasps director of rugby Tony Hanks said: “Coming off a disappointing performance like Sunday, what better opposition to have than London Irish, who are a team we didn’t perform well against last time.”

However, while the short term gains are obvious, Wasps are taking a long-term view and a number of their key players will be given the weekend off.

Paul Sackey, Richard Birkett and captain Serge Betsen will all step down, although Simon Shaw and Joe Worsley will play.

Hanks said: “Shaw and Worsley need game time so that allows us to rotate some guys who have had a big load. We won’t consider Richard Birkett. We won’t consider Serge Betsen or Paul Sackey.

“But we believe we can field a good team over the next few weeks and we’ll give it a crack. We never go out not to win.”
