WYCOMBE RFC coach Fe’ao Vunipola believes his team have turned the corner after ending a run of three league defeats with a five-try victory at Bletchley in South West One on Saturday.
Captain and number eight Craig Murray drove his team to victory with a hat-trick, with flanker Gilbert Chinjekure and centre Ritchie Lee also crossing in a resounding 31-7 triumph.
And Vunipola says it didn’t come a moment too soon.
He said: “After losing three games on the trot we were starting to question our ability and really needed a morale-boost.
“I told the boys that if ever we needed a win this was the time and thankfully we got it.”
However, after promising to introduce an expansive game to the club this season Vunipola admits he had to modify the tactics to secure the club’s first win since the opening day of the season.
He said: “I had to go back to the club’s strength in recent years, a forward-oriented game.
“That doesn’t mean a ten-man game. We still tried to get the ball wide at times but it wasn’t like our approach before, when we tried to move it wide whenever we got the chance.”
And now, with the confidence of a win coursing through the team again, Vunipola is looking forward to building on that at Salisbury tomorrow.
He said: “It’s great to get the win. It was more than relief afterwards and it’s really good to see the confidence back in the boys.
“Now I can’t wait to play Marlow again.”
