GREAT Marlow lived up to its name at the Junior Championships in Peterborough at the weekend, when their Junior 13 boys crew stormed to national glory.
Great Marlow also saw two other crews reach the semi-finals on a weekend of huge success for the school, but it was the boys who stole the thunder as Vinay Narang, Joe warren, Will Bailey, Graham Lyons and cox Sam Haynes produced their best race of the season just when it really mattered.
Rowing in a boat donated by and named after former pupil Sir Steve Redgrave, they stormed into the final by seeing off home favourites Peterborough RC, Claires Court school and Hinksey RC.
Then it was Evesham’s turn to feel the heat as Great Marlow powered away from the start line, kept their tempo well over the 1,000m course to win by five lengths.
The Junior 13 girls of Sara Waterton, Theresa Jones, Elli Osborn, Bethany Osborn and cox Abbi Collingwood looked like they might emulate them as they moved into the semi-finals and then made a fast start.
But one of the crew lost an oar 200m from the line and Perkins pipped them to the line by 2m.
The Year 9 double of Jess Clarke and Emma Boddy also fell in the semi-finals, while Great Marlow boys Alex Matthews and Joe Rockell, rowing in Marlow RC colours, took silver behind Windsor Boys School.
