Ben Brousson and Daniel Hill of Alexandra Kingston Petanque Club have taken part in the first of four national qualifiers in a bid to represent England at the Petanque World Championship in Senegal in November.
With Graham Elcome as third player, the team looked well settled, winning their three morning matches.
In the afternoon, they faced a tough draw, taking on the trios who represented England at the past two years' world titles.
They lost both matches but were still ranked a creditable 13th after this first qualifier event.
Given that only the country's top 16 teams will be asked to participate into the fourth and deciding qualifier, the Kingston pair still stand a good chance of pulling on the national colours.
