When Roy Hodgson opted to hand a debut to 20-year old full-back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the opening day against Fulham many questioned the Manager’s sanity.

Fast-forward a month later and Wan-Bissaka is one of Crystal Palace’s best assets and he made no mistake of reminding us on Saturday afternoon against Newcastle.

Palace’s struggle to score goals this season was highlighted further when their 20-year-old fullback, who only had four Premier League appearances prior to this match, always looked the most likely to score.

Quarter of an hour into the game, arriving late in the box Wan-Bissaka showed both skill and strength to control an Andros Townsend cross in the box, fend off Jamaal Lascelles and get a shot away that was eventually blocked.

Palace’s search for an opener left them vulnerable on the counter-attack. It was when Jonjo Shelvey broke in midfield and attempted to slice a ball through to Ayoze Perez, that Wan-Bissaka proved his defensive prowess. Tracking back on the half turn, he cut out Shelvey’s pass with an outstretched right leg and then started a counter attack of his own.

In the second half, Aaron Wan-Bissaka again looked like one of Palace’s most treacherous players. He involved himself in transitions of possession and linked up well with Townsend down the fight flank, exchanging turns to whip balls in to the helpless Jordan Ayew.

The most eye-catching moment of the second half was when Bissaka went up for thrown in. As he was taking his run-up he was struck by a green bottle that was launched at him from the away end. Just another reminder of how his qualities were frustrating Newcastle.

The young full-back was awarded Crystal Palace’s player of the month for August and if he continues to play like the way he did against Newcastle he will be a contender for September too.

Wan-Bissaka has a dual nationality having played for both DR Congo and England at youth level. However, Gareth Southgate is reliable when picking young fresh talent. We just better hope we see Wan-Bissaka playing for the Three-Lions sooner rather than later as neglect could see him follow his team-mate Wilfred Zaha in snubbing England for his African roots.
