Lee Bowyer says Jed Steer’s distribution was the reason why he started ahead of Dillon Phillpis in Charlton’s win over Wycombe.

The Aston Villa loanee kept his place in goal after impressing on his Addicks debut in the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday.

Phillips began the season as Charlton’s number one goalkeeper, featuring in every league game.

Valley boss Bowyer said: “I watched Jed on Tuesday night and he was outstanding with his feet.

“I knew Wycombe were going to make it difficult for us, playing the way they did against Luton, I knew it would be difficult for us to play out from the back.

“Watching Jed on Tuesday, he’s very, very good with his feet. He's like another [outfield] player.

“He can play it out to the full-backs or he can bypass the midfield and drop it into the striker.

“His distribution is better than Dillon’s - that’s why I played him today.”
