Leyton Orient fan favourite David Mooney’s second spell at Brisbane Road is over, after the National League side terminated his contract by mutual consent.

The striker returned for his second spell in East London in June 2017 shortly after Nigel Travis’ takeover and registered six goals in 42 appearances in all competitions last season.

But the 33-year-old’s departure has been on the cards for the last few months, with the striker not included in any of Orient’s match-day squads this campaign following the arrival of James Alabi from Tranmere Rovers and Matt Harrold’s return from injury.

Head coach Justin Edinburgh had previously hinted that Mooney was unlikely to be in his plans this campaign and confirmed after Saturday’s 1-0 win over Chesterfield that Orient were in the process of terminating his contract.

However, despite leaving the Breyer Group Stadium, Mooney will be fondly remembered by Orient supporters having established himself as a prolific striker during his first spell with the club.

The Republic of Ireland striker moved to East London from Reading in July 2011 and went on to establish himself as a key member of the side under Russell Slade, scoring 21 goals in all competitions as Orient reached the League One Play-Off final during the 2013/14 campaign.

He struck up a prolific partnership with fellow striker Kevin Lisbie that season too, with the duo scoring 39 goals between them.

Mooney left for Southend United in 2015 but returned following his release in June 2017, helping Orient achieve a 13th place finish in the National League last season.

The 33-year-old leaves Brisbane Road having scored 57 goals in 212 appearances in all competitions during his two spells in East London.

In a statement, Orient said: “Leyton Orient would like to place on record what a great servant David has been across his two spells with the Club, scoring 57 goals in 206 appearances, and we would like to wish him success in whatever he does in the future. David will always receive a warm welcome whenever he visits the O’s.”
