Performances are secondary to results according to Leyton Orient winger James Dayton, and you would be hard pressed to disagree with him after the O’s continued their unbeaten start with a battling 1-0 win at Chesterfield on Saturday.

It was Dayton’s fizzing effort from inside the box that settled matters with 12 minutes remaining in Derbyshire and ensured Orient made it eight unbeaten to begin the National League season.

And while admitting that, at times, his side were second best, Dayton was keen to emphasise the character and ability within their ranks that will make them a dangerous proposition for any of their opponents this season.

“We’ve worked hard and obviously come away with the three points which is the most important thing,” Dayton told the club website.

“It was a tough game really to get going in and we had a couple of little tiny spells but nowhere near enough that we probably should have.

“Tough games like this we’ve got to see out them [difficult] periods, and we know we’ve got enough quality in the dressing room to hit them on the counter and thankfully that’s what happened.

He added: “We’ve got tons and tons of ability and quality in this group so we just know if we keep a clean sheet we’ve got a good chance of winning.”

There has been no shortage of character within head coach Justin Edinburgh’s squad so far this term, and no shortage of quality either.

While Edinburgh continues to demand more from his players, including match-winner Dayton, the winger himself did concede that where his strike ended up was not intentional – not that he nor anyone else of an Orient persuasion really mind.

“I just thought hit the target but obviously I didn’t mean to stick it in the top corner,” Dayton said. "I knew I just had to get it on target but thankfully it just went straight in.”
