Justin Edinburgh says Leyton Orient may look to bolster their forward options in the loan market, although David Mooney is unlikely to figure for the O’s this campaign.

Goal scoring was a problem for Orient last season with Macauley Bonne lacking support from the club’s other strikers.

Bonne has already notched three times so far this campaign but new signing James Alabi has yet to register, while Matt Harrold hasn’t featured since March due to a hamstring problem.

Josh Koroma has been deployed up top alongside Bonne recently and impressed against Boreham Wood on Saturday with his energy and skilful play.

However, he almost didn’t feature after picking up an injury in training on Friday, but thankfully for the O’s he passed a late fitness test on Saturday morning which allowed him to start.

Injuries have been a problem for Orient in the early stages of the campaign, with George Elokobi ruled out for a number of weeks after limping off against Ebbsfleet United, while James Brophy is also set for a period on the side-lines due to a torn hamstring.

Josh Coulson also had to be replaced in the second half on Saturday, but Edinburgh insisted that he wouldn’t be bringing in any defensive cover on loan.

Asked about the loan market, Edinburgh said: “We will have to assess it. Not defensively at the minute because I think whoever we would have brought in is a long way off of getting in. Dan Happe came on today and was mature in his performance. Marvin (Ekpiteta) again was outstanding. Josh was a bit of blurred vision so that’s fine.

“Maybe in the front area (we’ll look to bring someone in) because if we’d have lost Josh today, we would have had to have brought Matt Harrold on and as much as he’s fit and ready to go, he’s short of match fitness. So, we might look in that area to strengthen the squad.”

One notable absentee from the match-day squad during the O’s opening matches of the season has been David Mooney.

The experienced striker returned to Brisbane Road for his second spell in East London in July 2017 but struggled for form last season, scoring six times in 42 appearances in all competitions.

Mooney has been pushed further down the pecking order this summer following the arrival of Alabi from Tranmere Rovers and despite Edinburgh toying with the idea of bringing in another striker on loan, it appears that the 33-year-old’s playing time will be limited this campaign.

Edinburgh said: “He (Mooney) is part of the team. In terms of being part of the plans, it’s unlikely that David will figure. While he’s contracted to the football club, then I’ve always got the option to use him if needed.”
