Club captain Jobi McAnuff is delighted that Macauley Bonne will be remaining with Leyton Orient and feels the striker has made the right decision by staying at Brisbane Road.

The O’s have confirmed this afternoon that Bonne has signed an improved two-year deal with the club, keeping him in East London until 2020.

The Zimbabwe international has proven himself to be one of the most feared strikers in the National League since moving to the Breyer Group Stadium last summer from Colchester United, notching 25 goals in all competitions last season.

That form saw him win Orient’s Player-of-the-Season award and the 22-year-old is already off the mark this campaign having notched a brace against Barrow on Saturday.

Bonne’s future has been a topic of conversation all summer among the Orient fan base, with director of football Martin Ling confirming back in May that he had opened talks with the forward about extending his deal with the O’s.

Orient have rejected ‘serious offers’ from other clubs for Bonne according to head coach Justin Edinburgh, with the 22-year-old being linked with moves to Burton Albion, Portsmouth, Shrewsbury Town and Dundee over the summer.

But the prolific striker has now decided to prolong his stay in East London and speaking after Saturday’s draw with Barrow, McAnuff believes the former Colchester man has a promising future ahead of him.

McAnuff said: “It’s been a massive positive for the club to keep Macauley. I’m sure there would have been a lot of interest. For me, he’s a top young player whose got the world at his feet.

“I just feel it would be good for him, and he would feel I would say that because I want him here, to keep playing for his development. It’s a fantastic club to be at and everything that comes with that will help him moving forward. Being the main man, he’s earnt that with his performances out here.

“I think for him if he had of moved and had to start again and get that confidence going again, it might not have been the right time. He’s just got to do his business on the pitch and everything else will look after itself for him.

“He’s going to have a great career and obviously we hope he’s here for as long as possible. He’s happy and he’s scoring goals now. I think he’ll go on to get a hatful this year.”
