Karl Robinson wants 20,000 fans watching Charlton at the Valley in the future.

Supporters protesting against unpopular Addicks owner Roland Duchatelet have stayed away from SE7 in recent years, while relegation to League One has affected attendance figures.

But Charlton’s annual football for a fiver day, where all tickets are valued at £5, is likely to attract a bumper gate for the visit of second-placed Shrewsbury tomorrow.

Valley boss Robinson said: “We know one day our objective is to get 20,000 [supporters] consistently at the Valley without cutting the price. I think Shrewsbury are bringing 1,000 fans.

“One day we hope this will be the norm and not a one-off.

“We want to make this club as good as it has been in future years and that’s really toppling these attendances and that’s our objective to do that.”

Charlton’s biggest attendance of the season came in the 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth in December.

The Addicks were celebrating 25 years back at the Valley and managed to hold 16,361 fans.

Robinson added: “Whether you’re playing in front of 25,000, 100,000 or 5,000 people, you put that shirt on with the same desire and application week in, week out.

“If a few extra bums on seats makes you play better, you shouldn't even be in the game.

“You put a Charlton shirt on, you should dedicate your life to it for that period of time, regardless of the surroundings.

“Whether you play for the reserves or the first-team, you should always put the same amount of effort in.”
