Portsmouth turned party poopers as Charlton celebrated their 25th anniversary back at the Valley.

Josh Magennis’ second-half own goal was enough to give Pompey a deserved 1-0 win against a lacklustre Addicks side.

Ben Amos saved a Brett Pitman penalty to stop Kenny Jackett’s men from doubling their lead, however, the Addicks failed to capitalise on his heroics.

It’s now just one win in five league games for Charlton, who remain in sixth with seventh-placed Portsmouth closing the gap to three points.

Karl Robinson made three changes to the side that drew against Peterborough in Charlton’s last league outing with Chris Solly, Joe Aribo and Billy Clarke replacing Patrick Bauer, Ahmed Kashi and Leon Best.

Clarke and Solly were deemed fit enough to play from the off after recovering from respective injuries.

In front of 16,361 fans, Charlton and Portsmouth seemed to cancel each other out in a first-half that lacked quality.

But the game burst into life after a slow start when Gareth Evans and Ricky Holmes saw efforts tipped over the bar.

Portsmouth would have taken the lead in the 36th minute if it wasn't for Solly’s goal-saving block.

And the Addicks went close just before the break. Ricky Holmes’ inswinging corner was headed on to the post by Aribo.

Aribo, who was making his first league start of the season, was Charlton’s best player in a drab first-half.

Portsmouth went in front in the 47th minute when Magennis headed Evans’ inviting free-kick into his own net. Jay Dasilva was penalised for a foul on Evans, however, the linesman had signalled for an Addicks free-kick only for referee Andrew Madley to overrule him.

Charlton could have bounced back straight away but Holmes’ cross was too powerful for Magennis to reach.

Solly was very harshly penalised for an apparent push on Pitman in the box, which gave Pompey a golden opportunity to extend their advantage. But Amos dived to his left to superbly deny Pitman on 65 minutes.

Substitute Leon Best had a header well saved by Luke McGee late on but much like the first-half, Charlton failed to create enough meaningful openings - and Pompey held on.

Charlton XI: Amos, Solly, Konsa, Sarr, Dasilva, Aribo (Reeves, 87), Forster-Caskey, Marshall (Best, 82), Clarke (Ahearne-Grant, 75), Holmes, Magennis.
