Charlton boss Karl Robinson has confirmed Leon Best is training with the club.

Best, 31, has not played a competitive game since January after being frozen out at Ipswich last season.

The striker has Premier League and Championship experience with Newcastle and Blackburn.

Charlton’s only senior strikers are Josh Magennis and Joe Dodoo, with the latter failing to impress after joining on loan from Rangers in August.

Best would add much-needed depth to Charlton’s frontline.

Robinson said: “He’s here for a few weeks - he’s training. He certainly adds a bit more depth to us.

“We’ll just have to see what materialises. I know the club tried to sign him two times in the past. It never happened. And just on record, he contacted me. So that’s always a positive start.

“He’s powerful and quick. That’s surprised me. I don't think he's played competitive football since January.

“He went to America and had an infection on the back of a groin op and it kept him out for longer than he thought it would have.

“He’s been a good addition to the dressing room and is a nice person.

“When you start doing things right, people will knock and ask if they can be a part of something. And we would've been stupid to say no to Leon training with us.”

Best has endured an injury-hit few campaigns, but Charlton could offer him a deal until the end of the season to get his career back on track.
