Charlton boss Karl Robinson says Josh Magennis answered his critics against Northampton.

Magennis, who signed a new contract on Friday, scored the first goal in the Addicks’ 4-1 win at the Valley, and could have had a hat-trick. Ricky Holmes’ strike and Jake Forster-Caskey’s brace completed the rout.

The Northern Ireland striker was guilty of missing chances in the 2-0 defeat to Plymouth last weekend, but showed how good he can be today.

Robinson said: “What a great way to answer some critics. There have been certain critics over the last seven days and he’s certainly answered them in no uncertain terms.

“He wants to make people happy, he doesn't want to be the reason why we don't win a game because it actually affects him because he really cares.

“Sometimes when you’ve got strikers who really care, sometimes their output is not what you wish it was.

“But he’s good lad and his goal so soon was deserved. You saw how happy the players and the whole bench were for him.”

Bolton loanee Ben Amos made two superb saves in the first-half to keep Charlton’s 1-0 advantage intact.

He was at fault for Plymouth’s second goal at Home Park, and bounced back well from the error.

Robinson added: “We play with four offensive players. Jake was excellent today. I thought Ben Amos really kept us in it in the first-half, he looks dominant in the air.

“It gives us stability from the back going forward. We had a 15-minute spell where I thought we were poor and Chris Solly stepped up, too.

“We could have scored a lot of goals in the second-half and we didn’t. But we kept on going. When they scored we showed a little bit of calmness. Ez [Konsa] gave us some more legs.

“What we've got at this club is very athletic players and it’s been one of my key components for the team. Don't forget we still have Ben Reeves and Mark Marshall to come back.”
