Charlton manager Karl Robinson insists Ricky Holmes will not be motivated by Northampton boo boys on Saturday.

Holmes, 30, faces his old club for the third time since leaving for Charlton last summer.

And the winger was booed by Cobblers fans in both home and away ties last season.

But Robinson reckons Holmes will not be affected by the taunts and jeers from the travelling fans at the Valley.

He said: “I don’t think Ricky is that type of character to get too involved with what people think of him. He’s a very individual type of person and he’ll certainly be raring to go.

“Ricky just has an on and off button, he doesn't have a progressive one that slowly gets him there.

“It’s either one hundred per cent or nothing. It doesn't matter who he’s playing against.

“With some players, playing against your old club, it does have an impact on them, but when you get what you get out of Ricky, I don't think that really changes.”

Holmes scored 11 goals in 32 appearances in the 2015/16 campaign as Northampton won League Two.

He moved to the Valley and continued his impressive form, ending the season as Charlton’s top scorer and winning the club’s Player of the Year award.

Robinson added: “Ricky was fantastic for them. It was a very good team that he was associated with and he got them to where they are today.”

A Chinese sports development and education firm purchased a 60 per cent stake in Northampton earlier this summer.

Guangzhou-based 5USport has a stake in the holding company, which has allowed the Cobblers to significantly strengthen their squad.

Despite losing their first three games of the season, Robinson is expecting a tough test from Northampton.

He said: “Resources were very minimal for them and now they're in a financial wealthy position and they've got a manager in Justin [Edinburgh] who will motivate his troops.

“He’ll get his players running around for him and tactically they'll be astute in what they do.”
