Millwall boss Neil Harris did not give much away when quizzed on transfer targets Jake Cooper and Ryan Leonard.

Reports last month rumoured the Lions to be interested in Cooper following his loan spell at the Den last season.

His parent club, Reading, are open to letting him go but the two clubs have yet to agree a fee for the defender.

Speaking after his side’s 1-0 defeat to Barnet today, he told News Shopper: “Targets? People that play for other teams, no I never talk about other people’s players.

“Do I need another couple players? Yes I do, certainly a centre half.”

When asked how close he was to signing another centre back, he said: “We’re inquiring about players, speaking to players that are out of contract. It’s certainly one area that we are light in.

“So for me, I want competition for places and building a competitive squad, and giving everyone an opportunity over the course of pre-season to prove themselves, new players and new players who have been here previously.”

New signings James Meredith and Conor McLaughlin debuted alongside Byron Webster, Shaun Hutchinson in a new-look Lions defence.

But a goal inside 20 minutes by Barnet’s John Akinde consigned Millwall to a narrow defeat in north London.

And the manager is looking to change things up ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Stevenage.

He said: “A couple possibly might play, there were a couple of solid performances today and some really poor ones. A couple players might get some more minutes into their legs.

“I’m not overly worried by it, but we didn’t click and we didn’t gel.

“I thought we gave the ball away cheaply, I thought that we didn’t make enough passes in the team and I thought leadership-wise we were quite quiet.

“So there is lots for me to consider in the team I selected.”
