Leyton Orient managed an emphatic 4-0 win against Newport County in a bottom of the League Two table clash.

Josh Koroma bagged a hat-trick with Steve Alzate opening the scoring after eight minutes to take the three points back to east London.

Newport had a few chances in the early stages but could not capitalise to put the O’s on the back-foot.

The scoreline is a much-needed respite after what has been a tough week for the E10 club after they were served a winding-up petition on Wednesday morning.

The hosts started the brighter of the two sides with Marlon Jackson gaining the first shot of the match but Nicky Hunt managed to block.

A minute later Alex Samuel curled a shot wide after receiving a free-kick from Dan Butler and Charlie Grainer was kept busy as he had to tip a Ryan Bird shot over the bar.

But it was Orient who broke the deadlock, against the run of play, in the O’s first attack. Alzate hit the back of the net after Koroma had broken down the wing and crossed the ball into the box.

The Exiles tried to find a way back into the game but it was Orient who scored the next goal. Koroma registered his first senior goal when he calmly slid the ball under Joe Day from a Sam Dalby pass.

Referee Gavin Ward came under scrutiny in the 21st minute when he failed to say anything to Sid Nelson after a blatant shove on Sandro Semedo.

Newport tried to cut the deficit when the hosts managed to get the ball out to Butler on the left but he fired a shot high and wide over the bar.

Mark O’Brien received the first yellow of the match when was booked for a pull on Michael Collins after the midfielder had regained possession on the halfway line.

County had a decent spell of play and Marlon Jackon almost fired home the ball to make it 2-1 but Grainer was equal to the effort and tipped it over the bar.

From the subsequent corner, Grainger managed to punch the ball clear but Samuel won it back before Callum Kennedy deflected the shot wide.

Three minutes before half-time the home side had a free-kick in a dangerous after Tom Parkes was penalised for a trip.

Butler then curled the effort inches wide after he tried to find his man in the box. And to add to the bad news for County Koroma added a third in injury time after Dalby played a lovely ball to his right.

Early in the second, Koroma showed a turn of pace to get away from Scot Bennett and he went down under the challenge of Day only to be shown a booking instead of being awarded the penalty.

Two minutes later, Newport almost pulled a goal back as the ball dropped to Sean Rigg but his shot was deflected wide and the subsequent corners came to nothing.

Jackson looked to line up a shot inside the Orient area but Parkes did well with a challenge to fend off the danger.

Alzate gained a penalty in the 63rd minute after Newport completely lost their heads when the winger was pulled down in the box.

Koroma subsequently took the spot kick and completed a hat-trick to take the score to 4-0.

In the 71st minute, Newport were still searching for a goal but Ryan Bird could only slice a shot wide of the box.

And Samuel should have pulled one back for The Exiles but Grainger was equal to his short range effort and grabbed onto the loose ball.

Newport substitute Aaron Williams managed to shrug off a challenge from Hunt just before he fizzed a shot across the goalmouth with no-one there to tap the ball in.

The O’s could have made it five when Semedo and Dalby linked up well to reach the edge of the area before the former sliced a shot wide.

Orient are now five points off of safety as they face Grimsby Town next week at Brisbane Road.
