In Andy Edwards' first game in charge at the Matchroom Stadium Leyton Orient defeated 10-men Accrington Stanley 1-0 in what was their first home league win since August

Jay Simpson scored the only goal of the game to take the three points in a bottom of the table clash.

Stanley had chances to equalise through Jordan Clark and John O’Sullivan but they were to no avail.

It will give Andy Edwards' side a much-needed boost ahead of their away trip to Wycombe Wanderers next Saturday.

It was a promising start for the O’s after Gavin Massey’s cross was brought down by Jordan Bowery but his shot was blocked by the Stanley defence.

The game became quite end-to-end after John O’Sullivan chased a ball into the Orient area but Nigel Atangana was on hand to slide in and clear the danger.

Scott Brown should have broken the deadlock but he sliced a shot wide of the post even though he had ample amount of space in the area.

Alex Cisak had a lucky escape in the 20th minute after Jordan Clark had an effort on goal which the former spilt and with Terry Gornell closing in the keeper was lucky to be given the free-kick.

Stanley had to play the rest of the game with 10-men after 24 minutes when Sean McConville was shown a red card for pulling back Massey when he was charging towards the goal.

O’Sullivan was also booked in the process for arguing with referee Darren Drysdale.

Orient displayed some wonderful passing football with Tom Parkes finding Massey down the right-hand side of the pitch his cross was cleared to Atangana who could only shoot over the bar.

Accrington could have easily gone 1-0 up after Clark intercepted a pass from Atangana but Cisak was able to save which was a lucky escape for the O’s.

O’Sullivan could have easily scored in the opening minutes of the final 45 but his shot went well over the bar from outside the area after Atangana misread a pass.

It was agonisingly close for the French midfielder Atangana with half an hour left to play but his shot was parried away from Chapman before he claimed the loose ball in what looked like a corner for the O’s.

It took until the 65th minute for Orient to score after Myles Judd’s cross was headed down by Paul McCallum and Jay Simpson was there and waiting to tap home the opener.

Cisak had to make a double save only four minutes later, at first denying Clark before keeping out Gornell’s follow-up attempt.

Simpson almost made it two after he carried the ball on the edge of the area but his effort went inches wide of the post.

Teddy Mezague made his debut for the O’s in central defence after signing for the E10 club in the summer as he replaced Judd who came off with a suspected injury.

Robbie Weir tried to go for glory with 10 minutes remaining after being teed up by Atangana but his shot was high and wide.

Accrington gained a free-kick in the 90th minute but Seamus McCartan’s free-kick was high and wide with five minutes of stoppage time added on.

Stanley pushed for the equaliser but the O’s defended to the end to gain a vital three points.
