Leyton Orient and Colchester United took part in a local derby at the Colchester Community Stadium and the O’s emerged as the 3-0 victors.

Two goals from Jay Simpson and one from Nicky Hunt were enough to seal the three points and move out of the bottom two up into 19th.

The U’s Kurtis Guthrie had chance after chance to get his side back into the match but failed to capitalise on his opportunities.

Orient looked like a completely different side to six days ago when they fell to a 6-0 defeat in the FA Cup to Sheffield United and will look to build momentum when Blackpool visits Brisbane Road next week.

A minute silence was held at the beginning of the match to remember the fallen of both World Wars and in recent conflict.

Colchester started the livelier of the two sides and had an early chance in the match but Tom Parkes tracked back to thwart the incoming shot.

But it was the o’s who drew the first blood with Simpson getting himself into some space as Michael Collins played him in and he found the bottom right hand corner of the net.

Simpson could have made it 2-0 after 15 minutes as he lashed a shot from the left hand side of the pitch which was palmed away by Sam Walker.

Colchester’s Richard Brindley had an ambitious shot from the edge of the box in the 31st minute but his shot was well over the bar.

After the goal it seemed to be all Orient as Gavin Massey played in Simpson after some great wing play but the latter could not get onto the end of it and the ball skimmed across goal.

But Colchester did not give in with Drew Wright trying an ambitious shot from outside the box which Alex Cisak held onto well.

Coming into the second half Hunt immediately took the wind out of the U’s wings when he picked up the ball from the edge of the box and hit the ball low into the right hand corner.

It was the right-backs first goal in four and half years.

Guthrie should have reduced the deficit minutes later as he had ample space and time in the box but his shot went wide of the post.

It was all over for the U’s in the 69th minute as Simpson scored a beauty from 25-yards which caused all the Orient players on the bench to jump up and celebrate.

Former U’s player Massey made way for Sandro Semedo and received a round of applause from the entire stadium with 20 minutes to go.

Colchester will be left disappointed after they got off to the better start but Orient were clinical with their finishes.
