Leyton Orient’s match against Gillingham was abandoned due to a serious injury to The Gills Lee Martin in their final pre-season friendly ahead of the 2016/17 season at Brisbane Road.

Martin spent a lengthy time off the pitch receiving treatment on a suspected ankle break from the medical staff when referee Craig Hicks decided to call off the match.

The O’s were 2-0 up with goals through Jordan Bowery Jay Simpson before the game was called off in the 83rd minute.

Orient had their own set of problems as captain Robbie Weir, Liam Kelly, Callum Kennedy and Sean Clohessy were all ruled out with injury.

The first chance of the game fell to the home side as Bowery smashed a shot wide from outside the box after good play in the midfield from Nigel Atangana.

A minute later, O’s new signing Harry Cornick, showed off his skills to the home fans as he controlled a pass from Simpson before dragging his shot wide from 20-yards.

But the away side also had their chances early on as former O Josh Wright took aim from just outside the area but his shot ended up over the bar.

In the 15th minute The Gills Cody McDonald got the better of Yvan Erichot but his header was held by O’s keeper Alex Cisak.

Six minutes later Wright once again tried his luck as his curling effort was tipped over the bar by Cisak but the corner led to nothing.

It was a quick break down the other end as Sandro Semedo delivered a cross from the left but both Simpson and Bowery were unable to pick up on the loose ball.

Cisak was once again on top form as he produced a fingertip save to keep Joe Quigley’s effort out.

Once again the O’s number one had to be alert as he blocked Jake Hessenthaler’s shot with his feet before the O’s scrambled the ball clear.

It was the O’s who opened the scoring in the 32nd minute as Bowery slotted home into the far corner with an assist from Massey as he shrugged off Paul Konchesky.

Erichot tried to make it 2-0 as he jumped the highest to meet Massey’s cross from six-yards but The Gills keeper Stuart Nelson was able to collect the ball before Bowery could get to it.

The League One side then gave away a penalty two minutes before the break as Atangana played in Cornick who was brought down in the box by Ryan Jackson.

Simpson then made no mistake as he sent Nelson the wrong way and hit the ball into the top right corner giving the hosts a two goal advantage at the break.

Cornick had an early chance to make it 3-0 at the start of the second but he failed to connect properly to Bowery’s pass and Nelson collected the loose ball.

The Gills almost pulled a goal back in the 55th minute as Mark Byrne slid in at the near post his shot went across the goal and out for a goal kick.

Bowery once again could have made it three for the hosts as Simpson played him in but Nelson was there to save the shot and Gillingham managed to clear the ball away from the danger area.

However, Gillingham kept pressing for a goal as McDonald sent an effort wide.

Ollie Palmer, who came on as a second half substitute hit the post in the 75th minute after Dean Cox crossed in a wonderful ball but it comes back out and The Gills defence managed to clear.

The away side then got a break but sub keeper Sam Sargeant managed to deflect Martin’s attempt behind for a corner.

But there was a break in play after Martin landed awkwardly after his shot and looked to be in a bad way.

Referee Hicks decided to bring the match to an end due to the extent of the injury before the midfielder was stretchered off the pitch.

Everyone at Leyton Orient and the Waltham Forest Guardian wish him a speedy recovery.
