Dimitri Payet believes he should have buried his volley for France against Switzerland in their goalless draw at Euro 2016.

Payet came on as a second half substitute in the 63rd minute after being rested from the starting 11 by France head coach Didier Deschamps.

The 29-year-old, however, was hard on himself in his self-analysis as he told L’Equipe he should have scored three goals from three games in the championship.

He said: “On my chance, Moussa Sissoko did superbly along the right wing and he put in a good ball for me.”

Despite his miss, France topped Group A, with Switzerland finishing in second, and this will see France take on the third-place finisher in Group C, D or E.

The French squad now have a week off to prepare for their next match but Payet feels they need to keep focused to ensure they continue to progress in the tournament.

“We need to keep in mind how we played during the first half,” he said.

“We played freely and were getting stronger and stronger.

“In the first half we played well, then in the second half, both teams took their foot off the pedal so that they wouldn’t concede.”

Hammers defender James Collins has yet to make an appearance in the competition and will hope to be selected by manager Chris Coleman in their final group stage match against Russia tonight.

A win for Wales would take them through to the knockout stages for only the second time in their history.

Darren Randolph’s Republic of Ireland need to defeat a resurgent Italy side on Wednesday to ensure they progress further in France.

Elsewhere, Enner Valencia missed out on a semi-final spot in the Copa America as Ecuador lost 2-1 to USA in Seattle.

Valencia was an important figure for Ecuador in reaching the quarter-final stage of the competition.

Both sides were reduced to ten men early on in the second half after Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia and USA’s Jermaine Jones were sent off.

Ecuador scored in the 74th minute through Michael Arroyo after being 2-0 down in 65 minutes with goals from Gyasi Zardes and Clint Dempsey.

But Valencia could not gain the equaliser after he found himself unmarked in the box two minutes later as his header went over the bar.
