Brentford will finish this season as the highest-ranked London-based Football League club and they could celebrate with a trophy or two.

Saturday’s 3-0 win over Fulham and QPR’s defeat to Burnley guaranteed the Bees will end the campaign above both west London rivals in the Championship table and head to Huddersfield Town tomorrow hoping to secure a place in the top 10.

A stunning April saw Brentford collect 19 points from eight games to banish fears of a relegation scrap.

Boss Dean Smith has been shortlisted for the Championship manager of the month award, while fit-again Scott Hogan is in the running for the player of the month award after firing five goals in 93 minutes' playing time since returning from a knee injury.

During the past 12 months, the Bees have rebuilt a squad under three different head coaches – Marinus Djikhuizen, Lee Carsley and Smith – so finishing in the top 10 will be considered a success.

Sam Saunders and Hogan put Brentford 2-0 up inside eight minutes on Saturday before Hogan completed his double before half-time to blow the Cottagers away.

“We were very good and started the game like a house on fire,” said Smith.

“That was a young team out there as well. I thought we had pace and power about us and played some good football at times.”
